We were lucky to catch up with Nickey Boyd recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nickey , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I started my Culinary Journey alittle late in life. I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in culinary at the age of 29. Before going to culinary school I graduated with a degree in Human Services with an emphasis on counseling and social work. After graduating, I went in a few interviews in the social work field but quickly realized it wasn’t for me. Fast forward I enrolled in culinary school and immediately felt out of place because I was one of the oldest students in the class lol. I didn’t let that stop me and I pushed through and graduated and began interning. One regret I have is not fully pursuing further learning at more high end prestigious restaurants.
Nickey , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always loved cooking and baking. I watched my mom share her passion for cooking by experimenting with various dishes and cuisines and that inspired me to do the same. When I realized I wanted to pursue a career in baking, my mom’s love for cooking is what made it an easy decision for me. Fast forward to finally finding my niche in culinary school I knew I wanted to dive in to baking and pastry arts as a pastry chef.
As my career progressed, I’ve accomplished a lot in my career. Various magazine features, cooking segment on Good day Atlanta, I was a finalist on Spring Baking Championship and also featured in Pastry Arts Magazine. Because I started out alittle later in my career I have a passion and drive to succeed and that is displayed in my pastries.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is the freedom to reinvent yourself as often as possible. We aren’t stuck to just one way of doing something. Although pastry arts is a science, as long as you stick to the basics everything else is free rein to express yourself through food.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One particular mission that drives my journey and success is making my family proud. Both my parents migrated to the US from Jamaica and have worked hard to support myself and my siblings so my success and goals are all to make them proud and happy about the path I chose. Another mission that drives my creative journey is being a light wherever I go. I was truly blessed with this talent and my goal is to bring enjoyment to the lives of others through my food.
