We were lucky to catch up with Nick Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nick , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
So far, my most meaningful project is my 1st short film, Blue Lotus. It’s a martial arts/action short film that I wrote, choreographed & directed. It came about because of inspiration from my friend & fellow aspiring filmmaker Brian DiLorenzo making a short film called “Void” + an inspirational quote by mixed martial artist Benson Henderson about pursuing your dreams. After hearing him talk on a UFC broadcast, the inspiration instantly struck.
Nick , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
While I have only made one completed short film & am still making my second film (when I can find the time), I started writing & coming up with action-based short films I intend to make based on my own martial arts background & my time as a grip/boom operator on my friends’ projects. I had done some work as a background extra in productions in NYC. I’m most proud of seeing my choreography come to life, how it’s molded into a solid structure when working with fellow martial artists & actors.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have certain stories I want to tell that are in my head. I believe in the resilience of the human spirit & martial arts is one of the most concrete examples that can be. I also find inspiration in the weird/eerie/supernatural & fantastical. Plus, while I certainly enjoy big action/adventure movies, I believe that stories can be told without all the special effects & such. There’s also something special about shooting in actual locations. It’s risky, but rewarding.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having energetic, collaborative & fun times on a set. The 2nd shoot date of my current short film reminded me of why I want to be a filmmaker in whatever capacity I can. It was filled with energy, laughs between the cast & crew, in sync collaboration & props falling down. It was one of the most fun days I’ve had on a set. If I could recapture that magic every time I shoot, then I’ll be happy.
