We recently connected with Nick Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Nick, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
My first response to this question is always yes, yes I wish I would have started my life as an artist earlier. But on deeper reflection , I realise thatI came to it at the right time. As a writer and performer I needed to live and have different experiences to draw upon.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an actor, writer, director and producer. I was born in Melbourne Australia but have lived now in New York City for the past fourteen years. I work mostly in theatre and help run the indie theatre company spit&vigor. We produce new works and have had four off-broadway shows. We also run a small black box theatre space in the West Village, the shows we put on there are what we have labelled as embedded theatre, intimate theatre experiences for our audiences. My play Anonymous has been running for the last year to sold out houses.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think the most important lesson you have to learn is about being true to yourself and the work that you do. We live in a world where being an artist is a commodity, and it can be easy to get caught up in that, The “how do I make this into money” mentality. And for me as soon as you can get past that, and focus on the work and the being true to your self, thats when you really become free to be creative. If you spend to much time thinking about what others will think of what you are doing, you are never going to be able to be truly honest in your work.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a writer, there is nothing more rewarding than having your work produced. When I write a play and then give it to actors who then take my words and ideas and turn them into living and breathing people. it takes my breath away everytime.
