We were lucky to catch up with Nick Sears & Justin Fife recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nick Sears &, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have any key partners or vendors – if so, how’d you find them and start working with them?
Myself and Justin had worked on a few projects prior to starting up the Disc Golf Show Podcast. After introducing the sport to him, as what usually happens with new players, he enjoyed playing right from the start. With disc golf being more of a niche sport, there wasn’t many consistent podcasts available for where you could gather information about the community and events. Justin has had a love for music and had much of the equipment for recording due to the bands he had been a part of throughout his life, as well as for the podcast and audio drama projects we had worked on in the past. As for myself, I’m a bit of a talker and enjoy a good discussion/debate when I have the opportunity. With our friendship being a strong one, we discussed starting up a disc golf related podcast and decided to give it a go. It was easy decision for us to do this project together seeing as how our personalities work so well together and we had the same kind of vision going into it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The first time I threw a disc golf disc was in the late 90s. After playing off and on for a few years, myself and a friend decided to play some tournaments around 2007. With both of us being competitive, we pushed each other as we continued to play. After getting a new job in 2010, and being married in 2011, a lot was happening in my life which slowed my consistency of playing in disc golf tournaments. After introducing it to Justin, it was a no-brainer to start up a podcast after a quick discussion about our mutual appreciation for this sport.
Due to the lack of available information involving disc golf when we started the podcast back in the middle of 2013, it began as more of a hobby. Our initial goal was to help any, and all, businesses wanting to be involved in disc golf by helping promote their endeavors via mentioning their products/abilities, as well as interviewing them on the podcast. We didn’t want to limit ourselves to just local information, so we made a point to provide world wide disc golf news to our listeners/viewers. We had an immediate response, surprisingly enough, from the European disc golf community. We started getting requests to review products, in addition to inquiries about guest hosts. Over the next 5-6 years, not only did we interview people in the industry looking to get ears/eyes on their offerings, but we were lucky enough to have a plethora of professional disc golfers on the show as guest hosts. After 2019, Justin had some other projects on his plate that he needed to handle, so we put the podcast on hiatus, however I continued to promote via social media for the next 5 years. I would check in with Justin now and then to see what his workload looked like and ask if he was ready to start the podcast back up, and he was finally ready at the beginning of 2024. Seeing as how we both have families and young kids, we manage everything outside of our daily jobs. We currently schedule the release of episodes to be every other week. Our hope is to continue to grow so that we can provide good content to our listeners/viewers as well as give back to the disc golf community as best we can!
One of the things I am most proud of, since we started the podcast, is that I continued to do what I could, no matter how small it may have been. On a more specific note, being asked by the governing body of disc golf, the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), to host our podcast at the first St. Jude Disc Golf Invitational in Monterey, CA, was an honor. I would love to continue to make the Disc Golf Show better and better so that, when I retire from my day job, I could put more energy and effort into this project.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the response you get from the community. As much as there are the bad eggs in any group, the overwhelming positivity from others who are doing the same thing is what pushes me to continue to move forward. Also, getting over the fear of trying something new, or any inhibitions about how what you are doing may be received, is a great feeling.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think the fact that, though we stopped the podcast for a bit, I continued to manage the social media portals was a sign that having a passion for something is extremely important. During the time the podcast was on hiatus, I used that time to learn more about other areas within disc golf. Some of the things I was able to gain experience in, outside of hosting a disc golf podcast, were being a part of a disc golf club board (Folsom Disc Golf Club), working with the city via the club, assisting with running a disc golf tournament, being the lead sponsorship team member for a Major event (United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship) held in Northern California, bringing in larger sponsors such as In’N’Out to a local event (St. Patrick’s Classic), and most recently co-designing a new course coming to our area (Roseville, CA) and starting up a new disc golf club in the process.
Still to this day, I enjoy learning what I can within disc golf, so that I can better provide content to those looking for it.
