We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nick Rufo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nick, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have been working on a photo series for many years now titled “More than a Moment”
It is a series that captures moments during everyday instances that can bring about a variety of different emotions and feelings. Seeking out these moments has helped me navigate my own ups and downs in my life. The act of observing and searching for these moments as well as the moments themselves act as both a distraction and an escape. I know that as long as I keep taking photos, I will never be able to capture these individual moments again. I can look back at certain photos in this series and know what I was feeling around the time of capturing them, and because of this, these photos hold a special place in my heart.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nick Rufo and I am a photographer born, raised, and based in Los Angeles. I grew up with art and the industry as a big part of my upbringing. My father was a film editor and my mother was a dedicated hobbyist in the physical arts. Growing up subconsciously studying my father’s eye for imagery and filmmaking was a pivotal aspect in sharpening my own artistic eye. We would watch a lot of television and movies together and I would always pay attention to what he would point out and focus on. He would bring me on set as a kid, and I also spent a lot of hours in the cutting room.
As I grew older I had a lot of fun making lots of different kinds of videos. My friends and I would create things from skateboarding videos to music videos and short films. Nowadays, I focus primarily on storytelling through still imagery. I’m a full-time freelance photographer and I specialize in a variety of photographic styles, from portraits to landscapes.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My passion for creating for myself drives my journey entirely. I love creating in many aspects, and I love bringing a creative vision to life, whether it’s mine or somebody else’s. I’m truly grateful for the clients I get to work with, and I am just as happy creating something-out-of-nothing purely for myself as well. It’s as therapeutic as anything can be.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
