We were lucky to catch up with Nick Robinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nick, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
In the mystical world of witchcraft and spirituality, there is often judement or mischaractarization passed by those unwilling to ask questions or learn. People are influenced easily by the media and it’s important to do the work and chat with people or research the things you may not know about, in order to have a more well rounded world view. When we are misunderstood, it is often due to willful ignorance, complacency, and comfortability. It can be uncomfortable to challenge certain beliefs at times, but it can truly open up many new perspectives and opportunities to have really cool experiences with people you may not have met otherwise!
Nick, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been a spiritual person, as well as a creative. Growing up in a Christian church, I always felt that there was more in the spiritual realm for me than I was doing. I felt that my creativity should be embodied by my spirit, and that eventually lead me to researching different aspects of witchcraft. While many different cultures and traditions follow their own unique and sacred paths, I have found my place in eclectic witchcraft-a form of witchcraft involving no specific rules and is ultimately up to the practitioner nearly every step of the way, as long as the practitioner is not appropriating a tradition/practice outside of their culture. In my craft, I work heavily with the elements and spirits of nature and the Universe in order to assist others in their spiritual journeys. I craft spells in the forms of candles, oils, spell jars, fire workings, & other more complex rituals at an accessible price for my clients in order to help guide and empower them in their personal journey with spirituality, mental health, and growth. I also offer handcrafted intentional jewelry and tarot readings!
Blessed Be Witchery is more just than a small witchy business, it is a safe space for queer, POC, disabled, & all marginalized communities. While I don’t plan on opening a brick and mortar store, my online spaces and my booth at every event act as a safe space where others will be radically loved and accepted, just as they are. This is something I am proud of, but am continuing to work on growing and innovating so that Blessed Be Witchery can uplift, empower, and honor as many people as possible!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is when others truly love and value my work. My favorite compliment I often recieve is that people can feel my energy through my work, which is exactly why I started my small business. I wanted to be able to offer my services and witchy wares at accessible pricepoints in order to bring healing and blessings to as many people as possible, and the amazing communities I’ve found myself in has allowed me to do just that!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The financial, mental, and often physical struggles of being an artist/creative is something that has been overlooked for centuries. While art is subjective and should not be placed into boxes, artists have always been placed into rigid boxes that often only allow monetary success if the artist loses their passion or mass produces. I think now is a time for artists, creatives, AND supporters to rise up together to build each other up as a community. We pour our energy, time, and money into every piece we create, which means that support is vital in order for us to sustain and continue creating in a society where financial prosperity is usually not in the hands of artists.
There are many ways to support creatives that are essential to our growth. Making any purchase from an artist or small business is the most immediate and often effective way to help us sustain, but there are so many options aside from just that! Sharing an artist’s work or social media posts help us reach people who may be able to make a purchase, as well as helping us reach people that may bring new artistic opportunities or connections! You can also refer an artist’s work to friends and family that may be interested, as well as liking and commenting on social media posts to boost the artist’s page. During holidays or birthdays, consider purchasing from a creative rather than a large corporation. Everybody loves a handcrafted or personalized gift!
