We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nick Rainey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nick below.
Nick , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I took a risk by moving across country from Michigan to Dallas Tx. I was born and raised in Michigan, but I have never enjoyed Michigan’s winters and I would always tell myself when I was old enough and ready that I would move somewhere warmer. So around 2015 I started making preparations to move, I began telling all my family and friends that I wanted and was going to move, but no one believed me. Me and my sister even started talking about moving together and made plans to move, but it just did not work out that way. Around 2018 I started dating my now Fiancé and we decided to move together because He wanted to move to Texas as well. We originally were going to move as roommates but shortly after we began dating. My poetry career started to blossom in Michigan around 2018 as well. I have been writing since I was a 16/17, but really started performing my poetry around 2012. By 2019 when I made the decision to move I had made a local name for my self in the poetry scene, but I knew I still had a lot of room to grow. So although I was starting to be recognized for my poetry, in July of 2019 I started completely over and moved to Dallas Texas. I have no family here and at that time only a few friends who lived in Dallas. I started completely new and it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I took a risk by moving to a state where I had no real support system and outside of the few friends I had no one knew my name or my story. I began building a life for myself here and started to perform in the artistic community of Dallas and I have once again created a name for myself here. I’m still growing and learning, but the risk was well worth it. I’m abundantly glad I took that leap of faith.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Spoken Word Poet/ Artist. I infuse music with poetry to create an experience for the listener. I got into poetry in Highschool, I wrote and memorized a 5 minute poem and performed it in front of the class and that’s when I learned I had a way with words and a mind for memorization. Poetry became my outlet. Growing up I didn’t always feel like I had a voice or that people really cared about what I thought and had to say. Poetry became my outlet where I could easily articulate the things I felt and even if no one would listen it felt good to get them out and on paper. I write about all of my life experiences, everything from Love to religion, internal struggles, depression, family issues, sexuality, social issues, if it is apart of the human experience chances are I have already written about it in some capacity. I try and make sure all of my poetry has a positive/encouraging undertone because I write mainly from my personal experiences and just because I was able to see the light in dark situations, that doesn’t mean everyone else is able to. So I make sure to sprinkle some positivity in everything I write about to give my listeners hope. My content and style is different from almost every other poet I’ve come across and I take pride in that. I might not be the best poet you have ever heard but I can guarantee there is no one else in the world that will articulate things in the way that I do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There are a few things that drive my creative journey. One of those things being putting love and light into the world through poetry. In everything I write I typically have some spiritual undertone or an encouraging message wrapped in poetry form. I want to heal the world one soul at a time. My niece and nephews also drive me, My niece is 8 and my nephews are 2, but I want them to grow up knowing that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. I want them to know its possible, that what ever goal or dream they have that it is possible to attain. I think life can sometimes be hard and in my poetry I aim to take the hard things about life and put a positive spin on them.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is when I hear or see people quoting my words/poetry in their everyday life. It lets me know my words are really impacting people and that really blesses me. Also after I’m done performing I absolutely love when people come up to me after I’m done performing and recite lines back to me and tell me how it impacted them. Or that it is exactly what they are going through and needed to hear. When I started performing I would tell my self if I impact one person with this performance it will all be worth it.
