Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nick James. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Nick thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since my school days, it was clear to me that a creative and artistic journey was my calling. Art and music were the only subjects that truly captivated me. People often wonder why I choose to perform music while also teaching art. To me, it’s a beautiful harmony between the two! Both mediums hold a special place in my heart, and naturally, I find joy in both teaching art and performing music professionally. I feel incredibly fortunate to embrace both passions in my career!
Nick , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since my earliest memories, I’ve been immersed in the world of art and music. The trumpet, inspired by the soulful notes of Louis Armstrong, was my first musical companion, and I dedicated 13 years to its melodies before stumbling upon the enchanting chords of the guitar, taught to me by my dad – G, C, and D, the building blocks of my musical journey.
From the start, my passion lay in crafting original tunes rather than echoing the works of others. For two decades, I’ve been weaving my own musical narratives. It wasn’t until the arrival of my first child that I ventured into cover songs, gracing various Detroit bars to supplement my income. Soon, what began as a side hustle evolved into a full-time musical odyssey, with weekend bookings snowballing into a bustling calendar of private events, corporate functions, and weddings.
A game-changer in my performance toolkit emerged a couple of years ago: the loop pedal. It added a captivating layer to my solo acts, although I occasionally join forces with a band when the occasion demands. Gratitude fills me as I reflect on how my musical gifts have not only fueled my artistic journey but also provided for my family. When folks inquire about the demands of constant playing and gigging, my response echoes a simple truth: “If you love what you do, you won’t work a day in your life.”
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The heart and soul of what I do? It’s all about forging those connections and weaving joy through my music. Picture this: when a client shares that I made their event unforgettable, and the buzz about my performance is echoing in the air—that right there is the pinnacle of fulfillment! Being part of countless celebrations, playing tunes that amplify joy, and gracing stunning venues – all thanks to the magic of music. It’s not just a job; it’s a front-row seat to people’s happiness, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting local musicians is truly impactful, and your presence at nearby events can mean the world to them. In a crowded digital landscape, even a simple act like sharing a post or promoting a song on social media significantly aids local artists in breaking through the noise. The support, however modest, plays a crucial role in helping us navigate the challenges of the music scene.
