We recently connected with Nick Heid and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, thanks for joining us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
The craziest thing that’s happened to me since starting Surf Fishing In So Cal was when I guided a client to catch a land-based record yellowtail. I was guiding a father-son duo and we were out targeting leopard sharks when our shark rod starts going absolutely insane!
After a long fight I’d guessing what it might be, we were absolutely shocked when it came ashore. You can read the full story here: https://surffishingsocalsd.com/world-record-yellowtail-caught-from-shore/
Nick, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey guys, my name is Nick Heid and I’m the founder of Surf Fishing In So Cal. I started surf fishing during the summer of my sophomore year of High School when a friend of mine introduced me to the topic. We picked a day, he took me to one of his favorite spots and I never looked back. That day absolutely changed my life.
Fast forward to 2023 and I’m a CDFW licensed fishing guide, and the proud owner of Surf Fishing In So Cal – a surf fishing charter business and a website and YouTube content creation business. I’ve also written for names like Western Outdoor News, Bloody Decks, and a handful of others.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I love this question because I think it’s a really defining factor in where I am today and what Surf Fishing In So Cal is.
My reputation was built from my passion of surf fishing. Like I said, I absolutely love everything about it and it’s become a very important and meaningful part of me. I showcase that passion through my website, my social media platforms (including YouTube) and more importantly my personal conversations and experiences with clients and fellow anglers. At the end of the day, if you work hard, you live genuinely, and you provide content and services that truly help people, you’ll be successful.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn is the fact that there isn’t only one “correct” way to do things. This is especially true in fishing. Many people (including myself) can get set in their ways and believe the way they do things is the best way and no other way works. I’m reality, if you put enough time in on something and work hard at dialing a technique (this is in relation to fishing but can be applied anywhere in life) you will make it work and you will make it work unbelievably well. Just remember, someone else is out there doing the same thing a different way and getting real good at it too. Be open to ideas.
