We were lucky to catch up with Nick Barghini recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
This is how I decide whether a project is worth working on:
“An unhealthy work of art… is a work… whose subject is deliberately chosen, not because the artist has any pleasure in it, but because he thinks the public will pay him for it.” -Oscar Wilde
I don’t like unhealthy works.
Nick, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Nick, but I do by Dēspö.
My current mediums are drawing, writing, photography and editorial collage; previous to these I designed my own clothes- this is where Dēspö was created; next will be film, and eventually music.
I set goals based on production so that I’m able to move between mediums without much overlap, and I’ve found that this process limits distraction and allows me to focus on and achieve what I deem to be success within whichever medium(s) I am currently working.
My ultimate goal is to create a neighborhood clubhouse called Studiox. Studiox will be focused on creativity and personal development for adults who are interested in growth and change.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I spent 8 months in jail, something I’m not proud of, even less so because of those that I hurt in the process. However during this dark period is when I realized that the point of my life is to create and to connect, and I decided then that I would spend the rest of my life helping others in an effort to atone for the many mistakes that I’ve made.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Studiox. I believe we all have the potential to be an ‘ex-‘ something, whether that means a traditional ‘ex-‘ (ex-addict, ex-con, ex-user, ex-abuser, etc…), or a non-traditional ‘ex-‘ (ex-procrastinator, ex-anxiety sufferer, ex-person who’s not living up to their potential, etc…). But in order to become an ‘ex-‘ anything we need to become a ‘pro-‘ something, and in order to do that we need encouragement, resources and support. That is what Studiox will provide, via the use of our neighborhood clubhouse alongside engagement with our personal development program, aptly titled, ‘The Program’.
