We recently connected with Nick Alvarez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A risk that I took in life was when I moved from Massachusetts to Texas. In November 2022 is when I made the drive with a friend to start a new life in Austin, Tx. We didn’t know anyone when we first came down or have ever been to Texas. We packed up what we could fit in the car and we started our journey. The drive was around. 30 hours. We stopped in Nashville for our halfway point and stayed there for a couple days in a airbnb, and checked out some places around. Then we kept going, stopped at a hotel in Dallas for a night and made the last 3 hours to Austin. When we first got down here we didn’t have a place to stay so we ended up renting out airbnb’s for a couple months. Our first intentions before making the move to Texas was to secure a place to stay before coming down but in order to do that we needed to have jobs to show proof of income so it was then that we realized we had to take the risk and just go for it. Once we got jobs then we ended up turning an airbnb stay into a lease opportunity. This happened all in the moment. One of our airbnb hosts had multiple properties so we ended up doing a lease for a place to stay in Pflugerville. During the two months we were staying in airbnb’s was the most bouncing around and stressful moments. Running low on money and not knowing where we were gonna stay at next. Fast forward to 2024 and I look back and it was one of the best decision’s I have made in my life to move because I got out of my comfort zone, made a lot of growth with myself made growth with my photography, met amazing people and I am in the best relationship with the love of my life. Moving out of my small hometown was the best for me. Take the risk and see what’s on the other side because it can change everything.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nick and I am 29 years old. I grew up most of my life in Massachusetts and moved to Austin back in 2022. I have a day job and I am a photographer. I’ve had an interest in photography ever since I started my entrepreneurship journey back in 2018 but didn’t get more serious about it until I moved to Austin. When I came down here is when I started getting gigs and working with paid clients. I got contracted with a photography company in 2023 and currently still am and currently in the works with getting contracted with another one. I have also connected with other professionals in the industry. I am most proud of the progress I have made with photography since I’ve moved here. It’s been amazing. I want my potential clients/followers to know that I specialize in portrait and event photography. I’m looking forward to working with new clients and continuing to grow.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal/mission that is driving me is knowing that once I can get to a point of financial freedom all the creative ideas I would want to do I can pursue without anything holding me back. I can design different products for an e-commerce store, have my own photography studio space, and have travel opportunities to experience different culture and environment in this captivating world.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think non-creatives will struggle to understand is being truly open minded to know that you can become something and make a living off a creative passion. Sometimes you don’t see what that other person visions. It’s the strong belief of dedication and having a good network. One person that you connect with can change your whole life. Networking is powerful and it’s not just about what you know. It’s about who you know.
