We were lucky to catch up with Nichole Tippin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nichole, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
One of the things I found the hardest with starting my own business (and still struggle with) were all of the doubts that ran through my head – “What if I’m not good enough?”, “What if I fail?”, “What if others laugh at me?”, “What if I can’t do this?” But success can’t happen if you don’t try. I so often swallow my anxieties and doubts and just go for it. The biggest key to my success has been to just go out and try.
And this can be different for everyone. At times, I spent hours watching YouTube, or participating in the many online workshops/mentoring available for photographers. I also made sure to find other creatives in my area so I could learn from them/shadow them and ask advice if I had a particular question. I asked for feedback and have always willing to make adjustments in my process, when needed.
Nichole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a photographer located in Central New Jersey who specializes in families, newborns, engagements, events, and weddings. I capture the beauty in each family and each season of life. My work is a mixture of posed portraiture and candid lifestyle photography. My images are authentic to my clients, bold, and full of color and emotion. From the time someone books with me until after their gallery is delivered, I’m here to make the whole process fun. Those who know me best describe me as honest, loyal, and intentional. I love serving the world by helping people feel seen, encouraged, and confident in who they are
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I find it so rewarding to catch those special moments that help you remember what your family relationships or special event felt like in that moment. There’s nothing better than when clients give me feedback that I have captured their children perfectly (even when a session was a bit hectic with little ones running around) or a couple is surprised that I caught the emotions of their wedding day that they didn’t even remember or notice. Time is fleeting, but as a photographer I get the chance to help make it stand still for a little while.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth! Giving my clients such a wonderful experience that they go and tell their family and friends about their session is the most natural, effective, and free way to build clientele.
The second best source for me is my website and Google. I built my own website using Showit and spent time learning about SEO and metadata and how to label my images so they’ll appear when searched. I know there’s even more ways I could be intentional with this strategy, but for the moment I have more inquiries than I have time to schedule. I also made sure to individually ask clients to write reviews on Google.
