We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas Wright a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Nicholas , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have an agent or someone (or a team) that helps you secure opportunities and compensation for your creative work? How did you meet you, why did you decide to work with them, why do you think they decided to work with you?

Yes I have a local, DMV Agent, Misty James (@mistyjamestalentagent), the coolest agent in the area for sure. She’s a former model herself so she knows both sides of the industry, on top of also being a photographer as well. She actually got me signed to my New York Agency, Tandem New York (@tandemnewyork), the sister agency to Curv Management (@curvmanagement) which is one of the leading plus size agencies in the tristate.
I found Misty through one of my favorite photographers Jared Soares (@jaredsoares) who recommended that I talk to an agent, local to the DMV about advancing my modeling.
Once she had the time to check them out, she says she “scrolled my 3 Instagrams for hours” at the time— (@theunluckyson – archive, @nickthekidd – professional modeling/UGC, & @fitsofakidd – daily outfits/GRWM videos) —we had a phone conversation that lasted over an hour and she wanted to help my career in any way she possibly could because she was amazed at my work ethic and ability to curate an entire photoshoot myself from location, to styling, to creative direction.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is Nicholas ‘NickTheKidd’ Wright. I am a fashion/print model and a multimedia artist as well. I’m a certified photographer by trade, but began modeling as an example to get my male friends comfortable with being in front of the camera. A couple ways that I add value that I feel set me a part from others; originating from behind the camera, I know how to aid the photographer when it comes to angles and composition by simply adjusting facial/body direction to help achieve the overall outcome. As well as offer a different point of view for enhanced or more effective moods to be illustrated. Present day, I am most proud of the fact that I haven’t given up and my resilience and determination has gotten me brand deals and campaigns as well as featured on Mercedes Benz’s instagram, four features in Photo Vogue, a couple billboards, along with magazine & online publications like MLS.com for their Marvel collaboration and two posters in the DC United MLS Store. I’d love for readers to know that I’m always ready and open to work as long as the vision and the business is right.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

To me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is physically and visually being able to see my art manifest in real time as it’s being created because without the journey or the process, there’s no story.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.

I feel as though many “non-creatives” live life from a sheepish perspective, following rules, living by a routine set by someone else, working a job they dislike, and ultimately being afraid to take major risks. As an artist/creative, there are no rules. And creating, aside from commissions, is the job we chose. So support & uplift your artist friends, & please don’t suggest a formal job/career when times are hard because you yourself don’t even want to work there, let’s be honest.
