We recently connected with Nicholas Segura and have shared our conversation below.
Nicholas, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
I’m excited to share my insights and positive outlook on the advertising industry. I believe that while there are challenges, there is also immense potential for progress and growth.
One of the key areas that I’m passionate about is promoting diversity within the advertising industry. Over the past two decades, I’ve been a strong advocate for diversity, particularly when it comes to Hispanic voices. I emphasize the importance of this because U.S. Hispanics have held the distinction of being the largest minority group since 2003. Additionally, they represent the 5th largest, youngest, and fastest-growing segment of the economy worldwide. Despite these significant factors, the advertising industry still falls short in terms of diversity, with less than 5% of creative professionals coming from Hispanic backgrounds. I also highlight the need for greater representation of other ethnicities, including Black, Asian, and Middle-Eastern talents, within the industry.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My dedication to diversity is rooted in the understanding that advertising plays a pivotal role in shaping thoughts and trends in society. By ensuring that diverse voices are heard and represented in the industry, I believe that advertising can be a powerful force for positive change.
My journey into the world of advertising began after a successful career in corporate training. I worked at Dos Mundos Bilingual Newspaper, collaborating with notable clients such as Sprint, Anheuser-Busch, and National American University to create Hispanic-focused print campaigns. My passion for authentic, culturally relevant Hispanic marketing campaigns led me to establish my own agency, CHE Creative. Additionally, I launched the Segura Talent Agency, focused on representing ethnic talent for commercial, print, and voice-over advertisements. These endeavors now fall under the umbrella of Segura Marketing & Media Solutions, where my goal is to build the most diverse creative agency in the Midwest.
Segura Marketing has had the privilege of working with various clients, including T-Mobile, Metro PCS, the Kansas City Area Transportation Department, Hallmark Cards, and multiple advertising agencies like VML, in support of their Hispanic marketing initiatives and creative endeavors. The agency is currently seeking to collaborate with credit unions looking to expand their Hispanic member base.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When it comes to securing the initial capital to start my businesses, I’m proud to say that all my ventures have been self-funded. I believe in starting small with a big idea and gradually expanding. In today’s digital age, I encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to create their own websites, handle their marketing, and craft their social media content to spread the word about their businesses. I acknowledge that mistakes are inevitable but emphasize the importance of turning each setback into a valuable learning experience.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For me, networking has been a key driver in acquiring new clients. I consider myself a professional networker, actively participating in business after-hours events, joining various chambers of commerce, and volunteering whenever possible. These interactions with fellow business professionals often lead to meetings that, in turn, result in successful business pitches. I underscore the significance of always carrying a business card and being prepared to discuss business opportunities, both to learn about others’ ventures and to share insights about my own.
In my view, networking is the cornerstone of success, and I believe that treating everyone as a friend is a surefire way to make significant strides in the business world. My positive attitude towards progress, diversity, and networking continues to drive me as I make a meaningful impact in the advertising industry.
