We recently connected with Nicholas Schmid and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nicholas thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In my third year of university back in Canada, I wrote my faculty’s musical. I helped with the early stages of production and attended rehearsals, but halfway through, I left for my study abroad in Tokyo. I had been in Japan a couple months by the time the show was put on. I woke up at 6am and got on a Skype call with the producer (this was pre-covid, pre-zoom) and she propped me up on her computer screen in the back of the theatre.
I’ll never forget watching the show I had wrote come to life on stage. Even watching it on that grainy, blurry Skype call was enough for me to realize – this is a magical feeling. This is what I want to do with my life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a screenwriter who recently graduated from the American Film Institute Conservatory. I typically write political dramas and social satires, both for television and film. I always want to say something with my scripts, but never at the cost of entertainment.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe that to help artists and creatives thrive, society needs to build a stronger appreciation for the arts from the ground up. A more artistically oriented education that starts at a younger age regardless of demographic is key to both creating an environment for current artists to flourish and to help the next generation of artists feel it is a realistic and achievable career they can pursue.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
If someone reads my work and I see them smile, I know I’ve made their day just a little bit better. Nothing can be more rewarding than that.
