We recently connected with Nicholas Rosen and have shared our conversation below.
Nicholas, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I believe the biggest challenge to profitability in the travel industry is the fact that it can be considered a niche business with a lot of competition. Every person who chooses to write about their travels and experiences hopes to turn their blog into a profitable income earner. Some have been working for almost 5-10 years and are just starting to begin to see a profit. If you are just starting, you may find it overwhelming trying to make even a tiny fraction of the income the more successful writers make daily.
It’s also determined by not only the amount of time you are willing to invest but also the beginning capital. Many types of programs and tools show you the “ins and outs” of how to make your travel blog and content profitable. Most of these tend to explain the same concepts, just in a different format. Those brands and publications are willing to spend thousands of dollars as well for long-term goals but some of us do not have the discretionary income to put towards this and instead must find other ways to make the travel blogging world work for us in social media and online.
The standard processes have also changed now with AI, virtual assistants, and freelance writers. With a constant need for new and updated content, you can find those willing to write about travel they have never personally experienced. It leaves the content seeming non-authentic and robotic which does not help to contribute to either your brand or style of writing. It’s also hard to take a person’s opinion at face value if they have never gone to the location they are saying is great to experience.

Nicholas, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I first got into traveling while serving in the United States Marine Corps. I was stationed during part of my service in Okinawa, Japan. It was my first time living in another country and put me onto the path of traveling and learning about new cultures and experiencing the day-to-day lives that they had. I continued to travel during my service to parts of Western Europe as well while I was back in the United States.
During COVID, I had more free time on my hands and wanted to find a new hobby to occupy myself. One of my friends was running a travel blog which I enjoyed reading and decided I would try that for a year and see if I wanted to continue after.
I found it very cathartic and enjoyable to write about my travels around the world and the experiences I had that I believed others would enjoy participating in as well. My topics included weekend guides and recommendations in different cities, annual cultural events, and general knowledge of the world.
This has turned into a passion project for me that I continue to work on almost daily. I have collaborated with other travel bloggers and tour operators, writing guest articles on their sites and exchanging knowledge and ideas about both the travel industry and social media presence. I have seen my blog continue to grow both in size and readership from people all over the world. I don’t think my brand is any different from many others in this field, only that I am speaking for myself and found something I have become passionate about and want to continue doing for the rest of my life.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had known more about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Keywords at the beginning of becoming a travel blogger. These are very important things to know in this type of industry and are a key part of how to make sure your travel blog is successful and grow your readership
In the beginning, I only thought to write about what I know and in my style. My only concern was making sure I clearly stated my intent and that the grammar was correct. I later learned part of SEO and Keywords help so that search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing use those things to help rank your website. The right SEO and keyword can help bring you from page 8 to page 1 in people’s searches, increasing your chances of your written articles being seen.
Over the years I have learned more and more about these processes and now make sure to check my writing so that these can easily be identified. I still write in my own style but I make sure to keep these in the back of my mind.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I continue to increase my social media presence across multiple platforms with the simple rule of “you get as much as you put in”. It should not only be about increasing your numbers. Of course, you need to keep providing good content such as pictures and videos. But also to participate with others on their social media.
There are many just like you and me who are starting and looking to expand. I find it is best to start small. Reach out to friends and family first of course and then start looking outward towards others in your industry. Networks in social media groups help as well and there are plenty of these groups who all are willing to like your content if you like theirs as well. We all just want to be validated that what we put a lot of effort into is seeing positive results and that we all may achieve our set goals.
With trends continuing to change constantly someone who was not as popular right now will suddenly become a sensation overnight. The hundreds of different styles can help you narrow down your group to certain niches where you can shine and find others willing to help you.
