We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas Christian a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicholas , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I was fortunate enough to start being creative musically in my first band when I was 16. So I did start fairly early and had a lot of accomplishments back then. One thing I wish I did though was take it more seriously throughout the years, that goes for my art as well. But, the immaturities and goofing off from project to project has always made for fond memories and I feel like they were all pieces of me that needed to happen. I always question would things would be like had I taken things a little more seriously sooner but hey, things are where they are now and that’s what matters most to me. I’ve been creating more so than ever in recent years and I feel as if those mistakes are all to thank. We live to learn.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I’m never good with this because I never want to ramble too much, but I’m a jack of many trades and projects.
Musically, I perform as a one man band in a project called Terror Toons. That’s my baby and the way I describe it is circus trance punk (you can categorize it yourself, yes you reader). I’m also the drummer for Disoviet, a Philly based Marxist D beat band, drummer and backing vocals for A Girl and A Clown and then there’s the handful of other bands in the works. Those are the ones I’ve been working hard with though. Music was the stepping stone when I was younger and was drawn to drums but has progressed to synths and any other noise making devices.
Along with music, I’m also an artist. I mainly dabble in cartoonish horror comedic canvas paintings but I’ve been experimenting with digital as well. Lately I’ve been trying to do more with it and get my works seen by more eyes to find others that will enjoy my delinquent doodles.
Speaking of eyes, I also design and 3D print toys. My babies right now are a series of eyeballs with different hats or hairdos called “TerrorEyez” as well as Yolk Hogan. Yolk Hogan is an atrocity I dreamed up at work where I put Hulks face on a sunny side up egg. All the toys are printed in resin then I hand paint them and have custom packaging. This has been like a dream come true.
To top all of it off I run a weekly podcast called the “Cult?Sure! Podcast” where I interview all types of musicians, artists, small business, side show performers, filmmakers, etc. Basically anyone that creates and has a story to tell I have on and talk to about all they do, kinda like this!! I took a little break but it’s going strong now well over 100 episodes which is amazing to me.
But yea, that’s the ramble. I’m also an aspiring writer working on a book, want to do some sort of magazine thing, do work in films, the list goes on but that’s for another ramble.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Basically just played the game of networking and being consistent with posts. Find others doing things you enjoy and engage in conversation and eventually it all loops back in some way to have others find you. My advice to anyone starting to build one is keep up with it cause it’s a good tool to use, but don’t let low numbers bum you out. Social media is a sick game that can break your character and form you into more of a “content creator” than a creator. Just keep being you and post what you want and it’ll start to find your people.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I say this constantly in conversation, talking to guests on my pod, etc, society needs to cut off from the mainstream every now and then and go out to a local bar with music, go to an art event, just go to something random you see happening with creatives there. You may find your new favorite band, artist, business, or even new friends at these events. We live our lives too much on a screen and as much as it can help spread creative stuff around, it also takes the life out of the experience. There’s so much being made everyday around us by people that genuinely could use the attention on it cause they aren’t made of money, a known face on tv, the next social media influencer, etc. By no means am I saying stop supporting those people cause I’d be a hypocrite, but pick up some rocks and find some bugs on your own. There’s a lot of unique creative creatures lurking!
