Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicholas Burks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Nicholas thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I would say a lot of times doing what you love or try to invest in things that you want to make money off of for sure. It can sometimes be a lot of overwhelming activities. But I’ll say this if you have faith in what you’re trying to accomplish and also in what you’re doing for not just yourself, but for everyone in the whole, you can keep on pursuing it. I ran into a lot of complications of people, not understanding my music to people, categorizing my music into something that it was not at all. And I had to figure out that the music I make is a full description of myself, and I should be able to be proud of it and describe it to people. So all that to say, if you have a dream, a vision, a goal and something you want to pursue. Do not stop. Hey, keep going. It is there for you and people that really want it for you, just as much will be with you on that journey.
Nicholas, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m going to keep it short, but powerful. I realize this is what I want to do as a hip-hop artist that it is what I feel that my people and people around me that do not have a voice are able to resonate with it is such a powerful thing. That is words, words, move people, words move mountains. Words make people understand themselves and what they need to do to accomplish the things that they want with myself included. I just felt like when I got out of college. I didn’t know who I was and also what I really wanted to do until I started writing poetry and doing hip-hop shows and just being around a lot of rappers. And people that wanted to do music and just wanted to express themselves.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I can remember this one time that stood out to me. Was that I had someone tell me that if they had to Risk their job on my music? And uh, if they had to put my music out to save their job, they would not do it, and that motivated me even more to do music. And I’ve been on stages, I’ve worked with different people I’ve elevated into working with a full band. I started to have a good team around me and a manager to help me to boot.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’d say most definitely music, industry nights or networking nights. I’d say, 90% of the things that I’ve been on lately and everything like that I’ve had because of that, I would say, make sure to do that because without that, a lot of things will pass us by. Learning from other people around us and just actually investing into our self’s more into other people that may have it more together than us.
