We recently connected with Nichola Lynch and have shared our conversation below.
Nichola , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’ve been in the hair industry for 21 years I started when I was 15 years Old at the time I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was going through a rebellious stage, I hated school, I just wanted to have freedom but my parents were very strict with me ( for very good reasons) I would say about a month in to being in the salon I knew that I wanted to be apart of the hair world. It’s a tough industry mentally and physically and you have to love the craziness and drama of it all, but I wouldn’t change my career for the world I love what I do , and I’ve created a pretty good life fo myself and my son doing hair , it’s a industry that’s looked down on a lot.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m 37 years old , I’m from Dublin, Ireland I have a 6 year old son Skyler. I moved to Miami in 2008 and I got my first job in a salon called cutler and quickly realized it wasn’t like the salons back home , I had to hustle and really work to build a clientele (which I did) i would say yes to every single client/ job that came my way, and all these years later I still have that mentality I work 7 days a week.. it takes a certain type of personality to deal with celebrities and high end clients and I think I have mastered that, you have to know how to read a room, and understand the client and their wants and needs.. you have to have no ego and the patients of a saint! And most important you have to love what you do and I do
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Through Covid my career path changed I was the manager of my salon for the last seven years which required me to be in the salon five days a week for 10 hour days. But during Covid I started to get a lot more clients that wanted services at home and I realized that I can work less hours in the salon, have less responsibility , have more time with my son and make more money. So I gave up my management job , cut my days to a 4 day work week in the salon and started to build my own business.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part of my job is that no matter what when someone comes through the door and sits in my chair they could be having the worst day in the world and they leave feeling like a million dollars , A huge part of your job as a hairstylist is to listen to peoples problems and let them vent about what they have going on in their lives so most of the time when people leave they feel like they’ve had a therapy session on top of feeling better about themselves!
