We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicho Now a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicho , appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Yes. Since a child , I have always been a person to love to create. Whether making home made videos , making music on a cpu headset or starting random crews in my school. These are things that I just love to do and when I do them I like to present them to as many people as I can . As I got older I never stopped crafting my interest or honing my skill to be as sharp and professional as I see on tv or the internet. After going through a series of labor jobs like cable installation, car salesman and janitor , I realized I could make money from the things I love to do . So I invested in a camera , took my personal taste and found people who would pay for me to film things for them whether it be events , music videos or promotional material. I always found people interested in hiring me for the type of videos I would make. And on the music side I got more confident in my abilities as a producer the more people started to work with me . Then it got to a point where people pay me for my production, mixing and mastering skillset. As for me being a solo artist releasing my own work , I am always going to express myself via that lane because thats what I have always done from the heart.
Nicho , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Believe it or not, I would probably say my creative journey first began in the 7th grade. I would use a headset mic and my moms old computer to make funny remixes out of popular songs of the time. Later on in high school, my interest in photography peaked. I just liked taking pictures, things, people. It didn’t matter, I had a natural eye for angles and enjoyed it. As I’ve gotten older I’ve continued to hone in on these crafts, leading me to now where I’m actually able to live off my creative abilities and support my family. I have professional production credits for my music and for other artists, I’ve been filming events for about six years and even shoot aerial videography via drone. I’m thankful for my growth over the years and look forward to continuing to expand. My biggest area of focus right now is breaking out as a solo artist, it’s been a scary and exciting journey thus far.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
With time I’ve grown to realize the importance of having a team as an overall resource. I think in this day and age, people can be really proud and think they have to do everything on their own. I wish earlier in my career I was more inclined to ask for help and knowing how to navigate and foster the relationships I made when networking. Networking and team building should be essential to any creative early on.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative has been knowing that no matter where I go, I can always enhance someone’s experience simply by creating art. Even in my own experiences, knowing that anything can result in inspiration makes life in general even more exciting and enjoyable.
