We were lucky to catch up with Nichelle Compere recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nichelle, appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
My business was birthed in the midst of Covid & after becoming a mom to two boys. It was about adapting to this new version of life while still tapping into my innate skills, abilities, and experiences. I remember when I was separating from the Air Force, we go through this process called TAP (Transitional Assistance Program). They give us three course options to choose: 1) Job/Career Applications, 2) College Preparation, & 3) Entrepreneurship. I remember my little snark thinking “Who’s really out here starting a business?”. The idea was so foreign to me and I laugh at myself now because if I knew what I knew now I would have got all the information that I could about starting and running a business then to prepare me for now.
I didn’t start my business intentionally. I was looking for any way to make money without sacrificing my family’s health or being an absent parent. First, there was applying for at-home jobs on TheMomProject.com, then I took a course on how to become a VA (virtual assistant). Once I landed my first client it was only right to register my business and really let it take a life of its own.
I went from serving as a Virtual Office Business Manager to a Project & Program manager for a seven-figure business within my first year of business. There is no magic trigger to starting and creating a successful business. It’s the daily investment that you put into it. It’s about being consistent in showing up. It’s about finding the right support system, the right coaches & mentors, & constantly unlearning toxic mindsets & behaviors, and taking on the identity of who you want to become.
In order to go from idea to execution, you need 3 things: vision, discernment, & systems. Having an understanding of the type of life you want to live, who you want to help or serve, and how you want to do it is your first step. Then you want to make sure that you create a system that can automate receiving new clients or customers in your business. Starting your business is bigger than how much money you want to make, it is the by-product of doing the work that really matters and changing lives.
Nichelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey friends, I am the owner & founder of Compere Consulting LLC. My company helps women start & grow profitable & purposeful businesses. We believe that you can make a lot of money doing what you love and we share this vision without our clients with done-for-you & done-with-you digital product launch & coaching services.
A fun saying we share is that it is always launch season. If you are looking to feed the bank (increase your income), you have to put something on the menu (your products & services) and be open for business (actively or passively selling at all times)! We specialize in creating sales funnel experiences that elevate your client experience & make them come back for more.
At the minimum, you should have a way for your soulmate clients to reach out to work with you and digital products (free or paid) so they can learn more about you & the benefit of working with you.
I absolutely love seeing the look on my clients when they see their vision come to life and the fact that all they have to do is show up authentically as themselves. Being a Purpose-Driven Soulpreneur means that you are alignment with what you are destined to be and become, everything will always work out in your favor.
How did you build your audience on social media?
A lot of entrepreneurs stress over creating content & being consistent with it. The easiest way to build your audience online is by creating & living a life worth capturing. We’ve had it backward all this time. I’ve seen the best of the best stress themselves about what to post when the best content you can capture is real life.
Here are three pieces of advice for building your social media presence:
1. Optimize Your Profile with Keywords
If you really want to grow online, you need to be easy to find. SEO which means search engine optimization means you want to use words that YOUR soulmate clients are constantly looking for on your platforms. YouTube, Instagram, & TikTok are this generation’s Google & AskJeeves (I know I’m dating myself lol). If you are a coach, graphic designer, or influencer, make sure that is in your handle or your name on your profile. There are many videos & posts about hashtags, use them to your benefit!
2. Use AI to Elevate Your Content
The internet has made starting and running a business the easiest thing you could possibly do. Use ChatGPT or the Genie App to ask very specific questions to help you take your business to the next level. It’s like having a personal soundboard at the end of your fingertips. When it comes to content ideas, literally type in ChatGPT or Genie “I have an X business and want to grow my following and create content that makes people want to pay me to be their coach or design their websites (examples). Give me 30 days of content prompts that align with the above described.” And let the AI do its thing.
Systems and automation will make your life 100% easier as long as you are using it properly. Use AI to create a business that does what you want it to do versus you doing what it tells you to do. You didn’t start this business to give yourself another boss. You’re the boss, adjust your crown and act accordingly.
3. Be Yourself
It is so easy to lose yourself on the journey to creating a six or seven-figure business. The truth is that you will lose people along the way, but you will also find the right people to help you get to where you need to go. So many new business owners drive themselves into the ground because they try to keep up with these other creators who have big teams. Remember that your journey is unique to you and do what aligns with you while still challenging yourself. There is no balance in business only harmony.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson that I had to unlearn is that you don’t have to say yes to everything. If it doesn’t align with your morals or values, if it compromises who you are at your core, if it monopolizes your time and places you in a position where you miss out on what is most important to you, this is a moment where you need to pause and evaluate. I remember being in a position where on paper and in writing it was a no-brainer, but internally I felt sick to my stomach. Your intuition will guide you when your vision is blurred. When I realized that I could say no and I could be the villain in someone else’s story even though it meant that I was a hero in mine, I found peace.
Business is all about leveraging resources for money. People are innately selfish which means that you must protect yourself and be conscious about the business relationships that you can find yourself in. You’ve heard the saying all money isn’t good money and I promise you that when you set healthy boundaries, decline offers that are not beneficial to you, and affix your message to clients that align with your morals and values you will attract them like bees to honey. It’s okay to say no if it doesn’t make sense for you and your business.
