We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nichel Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nichel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
Early in my business, a client sent in hair from her own brand for me to create a wig. Everything was going smoothly until I started bleaching the knots. Within minutes, the closure began shedding in clumps. It just couldn’t withstand the bleaching process because the quality wasn’t the best. I was new, panicking, but I didn’t want her to end up with an unusable wig. So, I ran to the hair store, found a matching closure, replaced it, and finished the unit as planned. She never knew what happened, and it taught me how to problem-solve fast and always prepare for the unexpected.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m the founder and lead designer of EverChic, previously known as Bella Couture Wigs. We specialize in custom glueless wigs made with premium textures. I started the business for two reasons: to cope with the loss of my grandmother and to avoid the awkward stage of locking my natural hair by learning to make my own wigs. What began as a personal solution turned into a brand that helps women protect their natural hair while expressing their style effortlessly. Today, EverChic offers custom units, wig services, luxury extensions, and we’ve recently expanded into professional styling products designed to elevate the wig experience. What sets us apart is our focus on longevity, personalization, and creating pieces that blend seamlessly into our clients’ lifestyles. I’m most proud of building a brand rooted in both resilience and innovation.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the need to please everyone. Early in my business, I said yes to every request. Tight deadlines, complicated customizations, even prices that didn’t reflect the work I was putting in because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone or lose a sale. But trying to make everyone happy left me exhausted and nearly burned out. I realized that not every client is my client, and that setting boundaries actually allows me to serve people better and deliver higher-quality work.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I funded my business while working a corporate job. I cut back on all my extra monthly maintenance and taught myself how to do things I would normally pay for, because I knew those sacrifices were temporary and my goal was long-term. Every paycheck, I reinvested into my business until 2023, when I was finally able to resign from my 9–5 and run EverChic full time.
