Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nichel Anderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nichel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were to start over, and do thing differently I’ll make sure I know who I want my target audience to be. Build a community first prior to selling. I spent a lot of time in the beginning trying to sell to everyone just because they wore wigs, and that’s where I went wrong. It cost me time and capital because I didn’t know what to do and who to speak to.
Nichel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Everything I do, I do from a place of purity and love. I move with intention and do what feels right for myself and my business. I’m most proud of my growth and willingness to learn and scale my hair business. This hasn’t been an easy road, however when I focus and move with intention and clarity it makes it much easier. At times we get distracted with the world around us and that was one of my challenges. I wanted to be further than where I was and wasn’t focusing on actually growing and doing the work to get there. Once I realized I was holding me back I couldn’t continue to be a disadvantage to myself, there needed to be change. I want the world to know that the purity in my heart overflows into my business and I believe that is what sets me apart. When I speak to my customers I often hear that I’m so sweet, caring, attentive and that’s because I am. Myself and brand will become a household name for women where they can confidently go to for their business, life and wig needs.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The initial capital I used to fund my business was my own money. At the time, I worked a 9-5 and that’s where the funding came from. I created a plan to allocate certain amounts from my work checks to put into my business. This wasn’t easy because I had to cut all distractions. Shopping, getting my nails done, vacations, any extra spending all had to be cut because I had a vision for myself and business and I was determined to accomplish it.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There were times I was getting low volume sales… maybe 1 or 2 for the month! Was it discouraging? Yes, but the determination on me knew better was coming and I had to keep going. During these time my social media presence didn’t drop. You wouldn’t be able to tell I wasn’t getting much sales because I figured out ways to put out content with no new inventory. I used my old wigs and created new styles and content which ultimately helped me. The goal is to keep going as much as you can. If you feel it in your heart that this is for you then keep going. You may have to pivot a little, but don’t stop.
