We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nic LeBrun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nic below.
Nic, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
At the time I was managing a world renowned tattoo studio with some well known resident and guest artists who’d been involved in tattoo culture for 20, 30, 40+ years. All of them amazing artists with many of them having shaped what we now know as modern tattooing. I couldn’t help but notice their passion for their craft, their depth of knowledge about tattooing’s rich history and the feeling that they were part of something so much bigger than themselves. Having a natural drive toward artistic endeavors and creative pursuits coupled with a not so subtle burning desire I knew I had to tattoo. What I didn’t know was that one does not simply choose to tattoo, tattooing must choose you. Whatever it took, I was going to become a tattooer. And that’s exactly what I did.
Nic, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Having been an artist my entire life and being a collector of tattoos, albeit modest at the time, I applied and was hired on for a management position at a world renowned tattoo studio in 2012 working with some of tattooing’s upper echelon of artists. Their drive and passion for their craft inspired me more than anything I’d known before and I knew I wanted to become more enmeshed in tattoo artistry and culture.
In 2014 I started my professional tattooing journey. It’s been filled with many trials and tribulations, but just as many triumphs and victories. My most notable achievements being the ongoing process of overcoming self limiting beliefs and constantly learning and growing so that I may push my own boundaries within my craft.
Beyond passionate about tattooing I strive to set myself apart by acknowledging that I exist on a huge spectrum within the tattoo world. This practice dates back as far as known human history and tattooers have played many profound roles in the lives of the individuals and communities they serve and we still do. It’s important to me that I create a safe, comfortable and open space during this sacred and intimate exchange of energy. I want every client to leave with not just an amazing piece of art adorned to their body, but an experience worth coming back for.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The connections. Whether connecting abstract concepts and ideas to make coherent and cohesive illustrations or connecting with a multitude of clientele who have their own unique life stories, or connecting with artists from around the world, I value the various links I’ve made and the network of friends and acquaintances I’ve made through the years.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To embody a departure from conventional standards of the status quo.
Intent on the revolution of everyday life, I aim to actively engage the elements of existence, to embrace and embody a life abundant with the practice of radical play, perpetual adventure, and insurrectionary fervor. With every artistic endeavor, intention is set in motion. With every act of creation, a continuum of re-awakening, re-enchantment, and a life without dead time.
I aspire to reflect the deepest and most honest visions as to what it means to be alive and let that be my motive to create. Expressions of what it means to struggle through passion and through pain, in an attempt to convey with the utmost intention of sincerity the rawest emotions rising from the depths of this burning heart.
