We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nia Teilor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nia below.
Nia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Nia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Nia Teilor an upcoming indie author and passionate advocate for literary arts.Beyond my own writing endeavors, I have dedicated myself to promoting literacy and empowering others to embrace the power of storytelling. As an advocate, I host book drives and writing retreats to ensure that literacy rates remain high, school library shelves remain vibrant, and my community has a similar love for reading and storytelling as I do!
I firmly believe that everyone has a story to tell. This year, I founded C.A.N. Press, a literary publication – short for “Change A Narrative” – focused on amplifying the voices of marginalized individuals. Through C.A.N. Press’ unique publishing program, we’re working to create a platform for unique voices to write and publish their stories, providing a space where their experiences can be shared, celebrated, and understood.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing that my work is food for the soul. Creativity is truly divine in my opinion. Not only is it fun and challenging, but it’s extremely healing and there’s a lot of research to back up its healing properties. Raising the vibration of the planet through conscious creation will always be the most rewarding part of the work I do because it just feels good.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to unlearn has been “good girl programming”. So many women, young and old, are gaslit into thinking that in order to get what we want in life we must betray ourselves and put everyone else’s opinions, needs, and feelings over our own. I am an artist so while I am sensitive and all for peace, self-sacrifice in the form of people pleasing is extremely limiting and tiresome. There is a way to balance being a genuine kind member of society, and maintaining your role as a special soul that has a mission on this earth. I would encourage everyone but especially young women to take the steps to recognize people pleasing and good girl programming in your life, and work to resolve it.
