We were lucky to catch up with Nia Johnson-Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nia, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I am a board-certified emergency medicine physician. I practiced in Houston, TX and the surrounding areas for 13 years. While I loved so many things about the field, it was not good for my quality of life. I had two small children and a husband with an equally demanding job. The nights, holidays, weekends, and shift work were brutal on a growing family. After I had my second child in 2011, I lost. a considerable amount of weight. Losing fat in my face contributed to premature signs of aging. As a result, I went to see my Dermatologist who suggested fillers to restore facial volume. I walked out of the office confident, but I thought, “I would love to do that!” I started pursuing aesthetics in 2014. I went to a weekend class that frankly terrified me. Although I was certified in both neurotoxin and fillers, I knew that I had to create a residency for myself. I studied anatomy, did private trainings with world-renowned injectors, and attended international conferences. The amazing staff that I worked with in the ER and my family were among my first patients. My husband is an orthopaedic spine surgeon and has his own practice. On my days off, I started seeing patients in his office. I promised myself that when I had 100 patients, I would open my own place. I found a room in the Montrose area and I shared the location with 3 aestheticians. Niaaestheticsmd officially opened its doors in late 2019. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced us to close in early 2020. I went back to work in the emergency room during the pandemic. In the latter part of 2020, we re-opened and I worked in the ER once a week due to the uncertainty of the pandemic. I still can’t comprehend how fast the practice grew, but I moved into my own office a few months later. I saw my last emergency room patient in August of 2021. To date, I have serviced about 2000 women and men. I have an office manager, a front desk coordinator, a social media manager, and a marketing team. I feel so blessed to do what I love every single day.
When I opened Niaaestheticsmd, I never thought I would leave the ER. I put one foot in front of the other and I kept going. I always tell people that motivation is not what will breed success, it’s dedication and persistence. When things get rough, reroute and keep going. If business is slow, don’t worry! Use that time to plan for the future of your business.
Niaaestheticsmd offers aesthetic services in a unique boutique setting. We only see one patient at a time and we have a special relationship with all of our patients. While I practiced emergency medicine, I could never control wait times and I couldn’t establish long term relationships with my patients. I wanted the exact opposite in my practice. Once you step through the doors of Niaaestheticsmd, each person receives undivided attention and a unique aesthetics plan to meet your goals.
I am excited for the future of my business. We have new staff members joining our team. The future of Niaaestheticsmd is bright.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a board-certified emergency medicine physician. I trained at UT Hermann in the medical center. I served as chief resident and was awarded teacher of the year during may training. I practiced for 13 years. I started studying aesthetics about 10 years ago. Niaaestheticsmd opened in 2019 and we have serviced nearly 2000 women and men.
We specialize in full facial rejuvenation with neurotoxins and dermal fillers. We also specialize in skincare using medical grade technologies and skincare. We offer PDO threads, kybella (fat dissolver), Sculptra, a weight loss/nutrition program, and PRP services for skin and hair.
We are proud to offer these services in a boutique setting with no wait times which sets us apart from traditional medspas,
All of the services are done by me, the medical doctor. You can be assured that your results and safety are our highest priority.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I did my own social media for nearly 2 years. I think it’s absolutely imperative to be yourself. Your audience is drawn to your personality. It’s important to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. We have shown unique cases, complications and how we fix them, and the patient experience.
I also think it’s important to showcase what a normal day is like for the business owner. People are drawn to your experience and it inspires other business owners. Highlight the trials and show how you troubleshoot them. Show your staff and their hard work and commitment to the practice, I always tell them we are a team and if we have a week link, we will never get to the championship (successful business).
Last, invite your audience into your personal space. I get to know my patients in my chair, they get to see my beautiful family that I work so hard for on social media.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that my audience sees my commitment to aesthetics through all of my continuous education. I attend meetings, international conferences, private and group trainings. I am committed to natural results, not facial alteration. My patients also respect me because I will tell them no. I don’t sell services that are not in line with our goals or that they will not benefit from.
