We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nhayah Goode a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nhayah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally was when I was a child. I knew I could write AND sing when I was in elementary school and as I got older, I knew I didn’t necessarily want to work for anyone else permanently. However, my entire family is pro government jobs and a 9 to 5 period. Everyone is military, police, etc. I joined the military when I was 18, deployed to South Korea and Tikrit, Iraq and Honorably separated from the military in 2011. I studied Radio and Television Broadcasting and was immediately hired as the Master Control Engineer for PBS, followed by the same position at CBS and Telemundo in Austin, Texas. I had an internship with Townsquare Media, because I’ve always loved radio broadcasting and I finally worked at Killeen Daily Herald in advertising before I completed my corporate experience and begin delving into what my gifts could open up for me. Shortly afterwards, I designed my website and began writing various blogs. I started writing for the Underground Monthly, a Veteran Owned magazine. I begin being paid to perform at various venues all over Fort Hood and Austin, Texas. I was in four stage-plays in one year, on of them, Tempest, was filmed and is available on Amazon Prime. I began curating a monthly live music event at a friends brilliant bookstore, that was always sold out and in addition I was managing her social media marketing and I was waitressing at a concert event space, which gave me the opportunity to open for Freddie Jackson and Glenn Jones. It’s been all systems go from there!
Nhayah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Nhayah Goode and I am a naturally gifted, versatile vocalist and spirited writer, born in Las Vegas, Nevada. My second language is music, I have a background in Radio and Television Broadcasting, and I have also served in the U.S. Army and am an Iraq Combat Veteran, currently living in Atlanta, Georgia.
My pseudonym is #TheLowkeySinger and one of the reasons I describe myself as such, is because I am a contralto and I have always been low-key about singing, but would never hesitate to sing if asked. I am a songwriter, with a collection of songs available to be streamed and downloaded on all digital music platforms. My latest record is called, Feel Goode, featuring DoeBoyPhilly, produced by Black Metaphor and Engineered by Amond “AJ” Jackson.
I am an author, sometimes theater actress, podcasting, astrology enthusiast. I have been in four stage-plays and I have a couple of credits on IMDB. The Stage-play Tempest, in which I played a cold blooded Antagonist, is on DVD at kzamore.com and is available to be streamed on AmazonPrime. I just wrote my first book, The Savagery of Astrology | An Astrological Satire and it is also available on Amazon.com and several coffeeshops and indie stores. I have a colorful and diverse blog called #TheGoodieJarBlog, a collection of erotica called, The Sensual Stories and my writing has been published in Central Texas’ The Underground Monthly and Kontrol Magazine in Atlanta. I am currently the horoscope writer for Sheen Magazine.
Love Always. Ase.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is that there are no limits to your existence and you can do whatever you want, regardless of what you knew and what you were told to do. My parents and family are mostly all military, government, and law enforcement. I was told I would join the military and go to college. I appreciate those things and my corporate experience, however, my Mother and I always knew that I wanted to do whatever I wanted to do and build my own empire.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I was terminated from CBS/Telemundo after a year and Killeen Daily Herald after a couple of months, I had to pivot and trust in my gifts to bring me the wellbeing and lifestyle I needed. I’m also grateful to the military for all of the things I went through, because that helped to solidify a lifelong stream of income and healthcare so I could mostly focus on what I wanted to create.
