We recently connected with Nhan Huynh and have shared our conversation below.
Nhan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was working as a mechanic at a shop in my hometown. I always enjoyed drawing. It’s always been a passion of mine. One day, a buddy of mine stumbled upon my drawings and told me he wanted one as a tattoo. I didn’t know what to say -I’d never had anyone wanting my work on them at that point. I told him he was more than welcome to have the piece and that was when it clicked for me. If one person wanted my work, who else would want my work? The ball started rolling when I was introduced to the person who would allow me to be their apprentice. Then, when I was given the opportunity to draw as a full time job, I was more than ecstatic to take the leap and fully commit myself to my passion.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Truthfully, I got into this industry by sheer coincidence. I had a friend who introduced me to a tattoo artist who loved my drawings and gave me an opportunity to quit my regular job, for one that I could fully immerse myself in. Currently, I’m only focused on large scale Japanese pieces.
When I have a picky client, I try my absolute best to compromise with a design that they want -yet, one that fits into the design that I have created for them. Sometimes, it can be difficult to explain that certain aspects of a tattoo piece fit their anatomy differently than what the client is envisioning. But, I’m very kind and always open to suggestions in what the client wants in order to create a unique and beautiful piece.
I’m most proud of my clients who trust me to do large scaled work on them, such as back pieces/body suits. It’s a humbling feeling to know that clients trust me to be able to work with them with their most valuable canvas: their skin. To know that I can create something lifelong that will bring them joy is an enormous amount of pressure for me, but one that brings me great joy. I love to work my mind when creating a design that can implement diverse subject matters, variety of colours, all into one that tell a story for them that they will love and cherish.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Knowing that I’m able to create stories for clients that they can be proud of sharing.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I enjoy going to bookstores and looking through a variety of art books to give me a better insight on how I can grow as an artist whilst learning new ways to express art and push the boundaries of what I can do.
