We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nevaeh Conley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nevaeh , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
A lot of people have been dancers since they were babies , or toddlers. I actually started dancing a little when I was in middle school , I went to an magnet performing art school , and I started in choir but eventually moved to their dance program . Once MDC Nashville opened I saw it as a great opportunity and auditioned for their dance team. Knowing I haven’t had the proper training like the rest of the dancers. Still got accepted they saw something in me that I was still trying to find at that time. Training weekly hours and hours discovering I had a passion for dance and being such a natural. I found myself enjoying Jazz , Hip-Hop , and Contemporary . Dance started becoming an escape from reality , a place I could call home . Making friends who either had the same passion or just enjoyed dancing . It was definitely a safe place for me .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nevaeh also known as “Sky” , growing up as a natural creative has so many perks and also challenges. Starting out as a gymnast at a young age really helped me with my confidence performing wise. So many eyes and ears on you say when I would perform a “floor” routine all you can really hear is the music and your body springing on and off the floor, but after a while I knew I wanted to tap into that artistry building. With that being said; in middle school I went to a performing arts school where I first found the love I have for dancing. Taking a dance class everyday at school bye choice was one of the best feelings and no I wasn’t the best dancer in class but I wanted to be , I had the drive, and focus to continue even though I was new to the craft while mostly everyone else in the class knew the craft fairly well. A year or two passes and I learned that MDC was coming to Nashville and that right there was a sign that I can become better for myself I can do better train harder. That’s where it really all began. Being apart of the MDC Nashville dance team has brought nothing but great opportunities , friendships , mentors and I couldn’t be more than grateful . Dancing at that studio was my second home , I was so eager to become the greatest . that mindset is the reason I’ve come so far now today. Ive met the greatest people and choreographers/mentors who have shown me that if you want something you have to work for. I have recently gotten into modeling where I had the greatest experience walking in New York Fashion Week with The Model experience , I’ve had the dopest shoots with a great mentor KJ Davis, as well as Julia Veli , who was actually one of my designers for NYFW. Im just proud of how far I’ve come and I can not wait to see how much further ill go in the future.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me personally the most rewarding part about being a creative is always having a new idea , or something you want to explore , for example dancing is like the best form of art to me. Moving and telling a story without having to speak at all . That speaks volumes, dancing is so beautiful because there are so many stories that can be told, so many ways you can let go , speak from the heart while having fun. Its my safe place , and that there is the vest feeling being able to be vulnerable and open and express yourself through movement is so powerful to me.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Im still in the process of building my audience on social media but so far from my understanding , consistency is key which makes since because the more consistent you are the better the outcome will be. Engaging with your followers is so important , continuing to provide content that is appealing to the eye. 70% of Americans are interested in looking deeper into your account, profile, and content based off the organization, your niche. Being able to have a main goal is important because you want to attract like minded people or people who are interested in what you are posting.
