We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nerida Joy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nerida, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
As an esthetician for over 45 years, one of the biggest trends I am seeing is the amount of major cosmetic procedures being done very young 25-30 years old.
My concerns with this, getting a facelift at 30 that basically lasts 10 to 15 years will mean at 45 they’ll be wanting another. With more than one facelift distortion and scar tissue is hard to cover as we age and our skin gets thinner. I always say you can lift and tuck, but you cannot make a skin thicker.
The lack of understanding about what it takes to have a healthy skin long-term and the idea ofmaking women look more like characters is upsetting to me.
I love what I do and I’ve had the privilege of working on people’s skin for over four decades. It’s beautiful to have pretty, healthy skin and that’s what we do for people every day with great skin care and massage.
To have a healthy skin you need a great skin care regimen and to be consistent with that regimen. That doesn’t mean your face creams have to cost a lot of money, but it does mean that you use products that are right for you and your skin concerns .
Cosmetic procedures and surgeriesare like tattoos. They’re very addictive and sadly most people are never really happy after having them done. They may be for the first few months, but then it’s back to looking for the next best thing that they think will make them happy..
Learning to love being in your own skin, the unique beautiful YOU that you are is lost in today’s world by most, yet to me it is the most important thing about knowing who you are and loving self.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nerida Joy and I am an aesthetician of over 45 years. I am originally from Sydney Australia and graduated beauty school in 1978.
I opened my first business when I was 19 in Sydney and my second one when I was 21.
At 29 I came to America and built 5star businesses here in prestigious hotels such as The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills where I was for 10 years.
Since then, I’ve been hired to build 5star spas in hotels across the country, including Hawaii.
The education behind what I do in teaching people about how to take care of their skin is very important to me. I am a keynote speaker at major aesthetic conferences worldwide, on the “Brain trust” board for NewBeauty Magazine and built an online educational platform for aestheticians called the Five Star Method.
I have over the past 30 years consulted for companies such as Guthy Renker, in developing celebrity skin care lines that continue to be in demand today.
Celebrity clients such as Jennifer Garner has been a client for over 25years. I have today a private practice and are fortunate enough to take care of some of the most beautiful faces in the world whom I travel with for their work.
In my industry, I am known as a skin care expert. I have been educating aestheticians on how to help their clients have better skin with facial treatments and home care regimens.
I am all about getting to the cause of your personal skin care concern and not band-aiding it up, such as with acne. There is no reason for people to be taking pills, such as antibiotics for years that upset the gut Microbiome when you understand skin and understand how to treat acne from the inside out.
This is what I am known for
I am most proud to be who I am today. At 64 years old I have stayed true to who I am and believe strongly that doing what makes sense to YOU always is key.
I am an educator at heart that wants people (women, especially) to embrace their own unique beauty and love self.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
You have to study what you love. Have many tools to pull from as everybody is different.
Do what makes sense to you, which may mean it’s not what you were taught in beauty school/college.
I did not come to America to be a celebrity Aesthetician. I became one because I studied my craft. Many different aspects of my craft to help me do my best work, every singleday,
Work hard at understanding your passion /your work
Stay true to who you are. Be honest with your clients. Be a good listener to hear their concerns and help them where you can.
Keep your boundaries and know you’re worth.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
About eight years ago, I started a YouTube channel because I was upset with how doctors were treating the skin, especially young teenagers with acne.
I had many people coming to me that had had Acne for over 10 years, Desperate for help. Some traveled from overseas, Had taken antibiotics for decades and nothing had worked for them.
In Australia, where I come from if you had Acne or skin issues, you went to see your Aesthetician. In America, people with Acne go see their dermatologist.
This is not to say that all dermatologist don’t know how to treat Acne, But many of them, don’t even ask about your diet, life style or skincare regimen.
The skin is the largest organ of elimination and clearly will show you what’s going on, on the inside especially with Acne causing trigger food I.e. Peanut butter, Dairy, Egg yolks etc.
This is where I started on social media. It’s a time-consuming investment, but it’s a way of being able to help educate people and that’s very important to me.
