We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nell Callahan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
The most important business lessons I’ve learned, I was taught by my parents around our dinner table. As small business owners, they taught me about creativity, problem-solving, persistence, and compassion. I named my firm–Frontwood–after our house to honor those early, enduring lessons and the spirit of entrepreneurship that they sparked in me and how important my family is to achieving my own vision for the future.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Frontwood Strategies works with advocates, business leaders, and experts to develop effective communications strategies, messaging, and national and local earned media placement. With experience leading high-profile campaigns, we know what it takes to break through and achieve our client’s goals. This includes leading public relations campaigns, developing digital content, fostering partnerships, executing dynamic events, and creating targeted advertising campaigns.
From the time I was a kid, I liked to tell stories and steadily worked toward making a career of helping people tell their stories. In DC that often means advocating for policy change. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to fight for civil rights, improve health care, scale climate change solutions, and make education more equitable. I also bring my results-driven approach to campaigns for values-driven companies and start-ups.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
In professional services, you are only as strong as your team. I value my team, work to foster their strengths, and encourage them to learn new things so that we are perpetually offering new services and perspectives to our clients. Having strong, positive relationships with my team and creating moments where they can get to know each other, despite being fully remote, is essential to building trust, candor, and a well-running company.
As we grow, I’m investing more in systems so that my team is supported and I’m offering benefits and resources that keep my firm competitive in the marketplace. This includes non-monetary benefits like flexibility as well as clarity of purpose for each team member.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building a strong following starts with understanding who your audience is. From there, it is essential to create an authentic voice and content that is unique. Give people a reason to come back. Give them a reason to share your post with someone else. Engage with others who share your audience so that you are steadily growing your reach. And then, don’t forget to post regularly so that you keep the audience that you have worked so hard to build engaged.
