We were lucky to catch up with Nekayla Henderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nekayla, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew i was good with the camera since i was a kid i was always taking pictures and in the mirror, I was just too shy to start. It wasn’t until after high school graduation pictures that I finally realized the potential I had as a model, I started paying for photo shoots to build my portfolio.. shortly after photographers started contacting me to collaborate, less than a year later i was signing to my first agency got into fashion shows and really starting to get my name and face out there. Now i’m an independent model, Brand Ambassador for 2 clothing lines, & starting to stick my feet in acting.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I came a super long way from where i started, middle school & the beginning of high school i was extremely shy & had low self esteem because i was on the taller side, super skinny with braces and bad acne. I didn’t fit in anywhere I felt pressured around a crowd of people. In high school, I ran track and that was my escape from everything until I had my daughter, not only did I stop running but I was put on bed rest toward the of my pregnancy & had to finish high school out doing home schooling. I would feel like I failed because I didn’t get to go to college right away, seeing everybody else pursuing the life we all talked about. Even though I was walking out with my diploma in my hand and my daughter on my hip, I still felt like i failed. My daughter definitely matured me a lot & when I saw my face on a little persons body, I instantly knew that I had to follow my dreams so she would know that she could be anything she wanted to be when she grew up. No matter who told me I wouldn’t do this or that, I kept going.. when people laughed & told me I was delusional , I still kept going. What sets me apart from other models and entrepreneurs is my drive and ambition. When i’m in my element I zone out, i’m in my safe place, it’s my passion.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to be able to mentor aspiring models and small children in molding themselves into a profitable published international model. I want to be able to have the knowledge and resources to provide them with opportunities that can help set them up for success in booking paid, high value gigs, submitting for magazines, making a resumè, comp card & portfolio. Having all the tools they need to be able to start comfortably.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience by being consistent with my content, engaging with my followers on live, collaborating with other creatives, photographers & brands. My advice for those just starting out would be to post and put yourself out there. If you don’t push your brand don’t expect anyway else to, people will typically buy from or support the ones that are going the hardest for their brand because they know that you’re serious.
