We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Neill Fleming. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Neill below.
Neill, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My one man show, Shard has been the most meaningful project I’ve worked on to date. It had a long birthing period, coming from the very start of the pandemic as an ‘online live theatre’ performance, which is something of an oxymoron.. We broadcast/performed it as part of a mini festival in those early pandemic days when no one knew what was happening, or how long it would continue to happen for, hosted by The New Theatre In Dublin, Ireland. It was written for me by a good friend, Stuart Roche, whom I had been hounding for a number of years to write me a piece. It started out as just over twenty minutes, and then we received funding to develop it as a full length (60 minute) show. This had a rehearsed reading which was well received. In fact, it was so well received that it was brought to the attention of BBC radio, who produced it as a radio play in 2022.
Unfortunately this meant that I couldn’t perform the play until they had broadcast it! So I was delayed a year, and in August 2023 I decided it was time to make it happen in Los Angeles. I found a director, a venue, produced it with my partner and promptly got cast in an indie movie shooting in Ireland *(of course) and had to delay by another month…
Part of why it’s so meaningful is that it was the first time I ever produced and performed a piece for myself only and it was a great feeling of accomplishment. Also, it definitely feels like the best work I’ve ever done as an actor, which was my north star when I moved here.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started acting and performing as a child, taking part in acting classes, drama competitions and performing musicals and plays all the way through high school. I then switched tracks and studied animation and interactive multi-media production but after a year of working for a video game company, I started acting again in community theatre. Eventually I left corporate life (NOT FOR ME!) and was working as a bicycle messenger and auditioning as much as possible.. In 2009 I managed to start working as an actor full time and it’s been my main goal, if not always source of income, ever since.
I’m a strong character actor, very versatile in accents and deep character work. I’ve performed a lot of Shakespeare, new writing, Samuel Beckett etc. I’ve worked on TV and Film, (Game of Thrones, Into the Badlands, Kin) and I love acting more than anything. I love devising work and working with a director.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My Mission goal is to always do the best work I can, Find challenging projects and dive in.
Have you ever had to pivot?
See above! I’ve been a chef, a graphic artist, a bike messenger, a yoga instructor! Whatever it takes to stay afloat and keep acting.
