Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Neicy Huddleston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Neicy, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Quitting my job to start VA By Neicy is the biggest risk I’ve taken thus far. It was an idea far in the back of mind but when I couldn’t take the BS of my previous job anymore, I knew it was time to step out on faith and do my own thing.
I didn’t have a solid plan, just a particular set of skills that I was good at (shoutout to Liam Neeson). I’d been doing VA work since about 2015 just as a side hustle. I never thought that it would bring me to this point.
I’d been at my previous job for 5 years and while the money was decent, I was miserable. It started to affect my home life and I didn’t want to bring that negativity into my house and around my daughter. Me starting my business was like a weight lifting off the entire household. I may work 10x more but the time/location freedom more than makes up for it. It’s definitely a risk I would take over and over again.
Neicy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started off doing virtual assistant work for a good friend back in 2015. She needed help and I needed extra cash. I’ve always been good at organizing and computer based skills. Pairing that with my English degree, being a VA really care naturally. It took some trial and error to figure out what my niche is as a VA. A common misconception is that all virtual assistants do the same thing. Definitely not true. I consider myself a strictly administrative VA. So think research, customer service, task based assignments. I absolutely do not do social media tasks-specifically content creation. Tried it, hated it. My clients range from startup founders to photographers to athletes. I offer my services by monthly packages, with the option to bundle for a discount. I definitely keep myself all throughout aspects of my business. I’m a huge Power Rangers fan so my packages are named after them.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth. I do run ads for my business but 90% of my clients have been referred by someone else.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Whew! A lesson I had to unlearn was everything that makes sense to me doesn’t always make sense to others. I’d have what I think is some great ideas for my clients and I’d tell them and some weren’t feeling it at all. And I would get so mad because the ideas are genius to me and I didn’t get why they couldn’t see that. I had to learn to remove my personal thoughts from their business and just focus on assisting.
