We were lucky to catch up with Neha Oberoi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Neha, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking a leap of faith away from the corporate world, I ventured into the creative realm of beauty and fashion photography in the heart of New York City. It was a bold move into the unknown, driven by a deep yearning for creative fulfillment and a desire for a purpose-driven existence. What started as a casual interest in photography in my early twenties unfolded into a profound journey. It wasn’t just about snapping pictures; it was about forging meaningful connections, weaving captivating stories & exploring depths of human emotion through my lens. This realization sparked a newfound passion within me, guiding me toward a career where creativity takes the lead.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I work as a beauty and fashion photographer based in New York City. My style draws inspiration from the captivating essence of femininity and allure, creating timeless imagery. However, my approach extends beyond mere aesthetics. It’s about crafting narratives, fostering authentic connections, and delving into emotional depths. While my technical expertise keeps the creative process flowing seamlessly, it’s my unwavering creative desire and passion that drive me to continually evolve and deliver successful projects.
My work includes features in prestigious publications like Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, InStyle, Marie Claire, Glamour, Grazia, L’Officiel, and more. What truly fulfills me is the opportunity to collaborate with talented individuals and produce work that resonates not just visually, but also on a profound level. Drawing from my corporate background, I bring valuable leadership skills to the table. I excel in team management and project coordination, seamlessly integrating technical expertise with creative vision.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience, to me, is an integral part of everyday life in the world of photography. It’s about facing unexpected challenges head-on, whether it’s dealing with last-minute changes during a shoot, navigating through unforeseen hurdles on location, or managing a team amidst high-pressure situations. Additionally, resilience extends beyond the creative aspects of photography. It’s about managing the business side of things, from handling finances to marketing. It means putting yourself out there, even when faced with the fear of rejection or failure. When email outreach is met with silence on the other end. In those moments, it’s crucial to be your own cheerleader, to keep pushing forward and believing in your abilities.
The COVID-19 crisis has been a profound teacher around resilience and the ability to find inspiration in unexpected places, revealing valuable lessons that have reshaped my perspective both personally and professionally. One crucial realization has been the significance of adaptability. The ever-changing landscape demanded a flexible approach, prompting me to embrace alternative creative processes. I delved into self-portraiture as a means to stay creative and maintain a personal connection to my work. The challenging times pushed me to explore unconventional sources of creativity, fostering a deeper connection with my craft.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Seeing your work come to life is undeniably one of the most rewarding aspects of being a photographer. There’s a unique sense of satisfaction and pride that comes from witnessing your vision materialize into tangible images. It’s the culmination of countless hours of planning, preparation, and creative effort.
Whether you’re capturing the perfect shot during a photo shoot, post production or seeing your photographs published in print or online, there’s an indescribable thrill in seeing your work take shape.
Moreover, experiencing your images connect with viewers, stirring emotions, or communicating a profound message adds another layer of fulfillment. Knowing that your photography has made an impact on someone else, whether it’s inspiring them, bringing them joy, or sparking a conversation, is incredibly rewarding.
Ultimately, seeing your work come to life serves as a constant source of motivation and inspiration to continue pushing the boundaries of your craft.
