We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Neena Casull-Lamb a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Neena, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve been baking macarons for almost 5 years and I set out on a journey to perfect them after I had my very first one. Everything from the texture to the flavor was truly an experience and I wanted to recreate that experience for others! These cookies are one of the most tricky things to conquer, it was a long journey and well; after many failed attempts and almost giving up I finally did it! I wanted to share my passion with the people I loved most and with the love and support of my amazing husband, family and friends, I was able to create something so much bigger. Things began to change and grow fast after my first custom order for kitty shaped macarons since then I’ve created macarons in so many shapes and characters. Putting this unique twist on the classic macaron makes me excited to see where my buisness will take me in the future.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I got into baking macarons as a buisness because I was burnt out in my other career of 10 years and with other personal hardships happening in my life around that time I found baking as an escape. When I finally found the courage to start my buisness covid hit and everything shut down. This posed a big problem because as a cottage baker, farmers markets were the first steps in getting our name out and for people to try our baked goods. But thankfully when things started to open up we got ourselves into a local market and we took off! Customers were ordering macarons for parties/events and that kept us busy in between markets. But soon as a customer asked if I could make kitty shaped macarons things took a whole new turn, soon I was making so many different shapes and characters – from Harry Potter to butterflies etc. It has truly set me apart in my industry and I’m so grateful for it! I love when customers light up and say “I can’t believe that’s a macaron!”
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a tricky one but it has helped my buisness grow, customers get to see my creations that normally wouldn’t be able to. I’m still growing my social media with every post and sometimes it can be discouraging because I pour my heart and soul into a custom order and when I post it flops on social media. I keep telling myself as long as the customer loves their order it doesn’t matter how many likes it gets on social media! I would say if you’re trying to grow your business on social media, dont be easily discouraged and use local hashtags!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth! When customers recommend their friends and family it’s the biggest compliment. When social media fails to get your product out, word of mouth never fails!
