We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Neema Naz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Neema below.
Alright, Neema thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
You have to want to dive in deep and do whatever it takes to learn about your craft. Do research, write, read, talk to people in your field or outside of your field. Doesn’t matter, as long as you’re putting in the work to be better at what you do.
Before I put out my first standup special on YouTube, I never really sat down and wrote and did research on my jokes for the first few years of my career because I was confident in my talents alone taking me to a higher level until I realized that without honing my writing/research skills, my standup material won’t get much better than where it already was.
As soon as I had this epiphany, I made it a point to sit down every single day and have at least 1 hour of my morning routines to write material and do whatever it takes to make it funnier.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Comedian and Actor. I dropped out of Uni to pursue it full time. I’ve been in this entertainment industry for about 8 years now and I am only getting started NOW. It takes hours and hours and years of dedication to the craft to really find your voice and get comfortable being on stage or in front of the camera at the very minimum. There is always something to learn everyday and nothing is more exciting than writing a new joke and going on stage in front of a live audience, performing it and it getting laughs. No better feeling than that!
I realized life is way too short to be doing something my parents, or society wanted me to do. Whether it is to make money or be happy, if I couldn’t do what I absolutely loved and made me happy, I don’t see my life being that great.
At some point I had to take that risk for myself and pursue my passions and dreams I had to fulfill my soul and happiness. Everyday I wake up now and I am grateful to be alive and do something that brings me genuine joy.
I think by being authentic and being who you are on and off camera is what makes you and your brand unique. Humans aren’t dumb, they will read right through you if you’re being fake or trying to be someone you’re not, especially in the comedy world.
I am most proud of being unapologetically my self online and in my real life because that’s one of the main reasons I’ve built such a big loyal fanbase that is always growing. My team and I built out and produced our own nation wide standup tour with no help from any gatekeepers and sold all the tickets ourselves to our very own audience. Nothing beats that for me.
I wouldn’t be anywhere with the help of my brother (manager), my parents, my friends and most importantly my fans
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing as an artist is being able to say and do whatever I want without someone telling me I can’t say or do it. I have complete freedom and creative control to do whatever interests me and if it doesn’t align with who I am, then. I also have the freedom to not do it and that’s totally okay.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I just started one day posting weekly videos on YouTube for about 5 years when no one was watching my stuff. even though I wasn[t getting any traction I stuck to it and I kept going week after week. I never gave up. I truly believe in if you want something in life you can go get it, you just have to stay consistent more than anything!
At the beginning you can’t focus or worry about the optics of your videos, production quality, content etc…you just have to keep trying new stuff over and over again until you find your niche and once you do, double down and keep going.
Once it started to pick up for me, I went over to Tiktok and instagram and started pumping DAILY videos on there and that[s when I really started to blow up and gain traction. It’s been over 3 years of doing just that and the growth keep getting stronger and stronger everyday
