Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Necolle Banks . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Necolle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came to the Central adult Learn to swim at the age of 43 as a complete beginner– a fearful non swimmer who never once put her head underwater or floated on her own until the first class. Four weeks later, I was one of the stars of my class on graduation day and begged to know what I could do to continue helping grow and reach more people.
After graduating, I started attending evening open swims and displayed a real passion for encouraging others to step out of their comfort zones and move past their limits in the water. In a matter of weeks, I transitioned from swimming for myself to swimming for others and let me just tell you… I recognized my gift and have not turned back!
I became a certified Adult Learn-to-Swim instructor in February 2020 and have helped teach at least 20 adults between group classes and 1-on-1 sessions since our pandemic reopening.
In March 2021, I helped the Kolb family and Heather Wilson Kemp teach 30 school-age children from Neighborhood House how to swim. I became a favorite for the teenage girls after giving them the skills and confidence to swim in and enjoy the pool at The Academy at Shawnee.
I was told there was a waiting list of 2000 people that has signed up for swim lessons who was all african americans. I prayed about this and then made a post about me learning to swim at the age of forty-three. I had a overwhelming response of people requesting to learn to swim .
I then started my own backyard swim school in May of 2021 teaching more than ten students the first season.
I have witnessed literal magic happen in the water with my students. I have been described as one of the kindest, most patient, and most compassionate instructors and my energy and efforts toward our cause are nothing short of miraculous! I am never afraid to share my story and let someone know I have been in their shoes. My favorite thing to say about learning to swim is, “Calm down now. We got this. It’s a process. That’s all it is. It’s just a process.”
