We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Neci LoveHarmon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Neci , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
I initially started sewing items in the early 2000’s. I created many custom handbags using different types of fabric media ranging from cottons to leathers. My cousin saw my work and suggested I create enough to host a “Purse Party”. A “Purse Party” is a private event in which purses and handbags are placed around a room. Participants eat snacks and purchase merchandise. I was unaware of this type of event, but I took on the challenge. There were about 30 bags designed and sewn. We set them up in my parents’ basement on tables with a setup of cardboard boxes underneath bedsheets. The event was a major success. So many items were purchased, and the excitement was intense. I earned my first $250 cash. It was the most amazing feeling I had ever felt in my life. It was so empowering. This experience left an imprint in my mind to which the creative life is possible mentally and financially. I used my imagination and physical hands to create an original product. No one will ever be able to lay hold of what I have as I continue to stay consistent and using this talent.

Neci , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been a crafter since before the age of 10. With many craft kit sets in hand, these experiences created a love for the arts. I was introduced to sewing by accident one summer day and the rest is history! The company, What’s She Creating Enterprises specializes in sewing instruction (online and in-person) and hosting crafting experiences which are reminiscent of the Paint N’ Sip movement. I am a teacher by trade but decided to commit to an early retirement to follow these dreams of mine.
I love to create one-of-a-kind art experiences for private and corporate groups including painted pillows, unisex jewel making and creating one-of-a-kind wall art. Clear and concise explanations are used during sewing classes which are held in online and in-person formats.
The goal of this business is to beautify the world one day at a time through creative education, build community and use fabric in various ways to inspire others. I work to inspire clients to have a good time, learn a new skill and enjoy life creatively.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One resource I should have used earlier in this creative journey is the aspect of partnering with other creative businesses. Networking and partnering with other like-minded individuals have been a game changer. That’s not something that I would have utilized in the past because I was the lone ranger for many years. There is no benefit in spending countless hours creating and researching aspects you do not understand when there may be someone in your tribe who knows the answer from previous experience. In short, USE THOSE RESOURCES!
Also, having the confidence to put yourself in an uncomfortable position in order for others to see your products and services. Whether it is applying for a magazine feature or connecting with a seemingly impossible contact; tasking risks and partnership are resources for next-level business ventures.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal and mission of What’s She Creating Enterprises is the work of beautifying people and atmospheres each day through creative education while building a community. Whether through a group sewing workshop or art encounter experience or handcrafted item the work is meaningful and effective.
