We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Naylah Campechano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Naylah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was born in New Jersey to a loving hispanic family who played music all the time and for me I feel like that impacted my mind so much since I was little. Listening to different sounds in the music was so mesmerizing to 3 year old me. Something about music made me feel so full of life and color. I remember when my parents bought me my first microphone, a plastic pink one and a pink keyboard, to me that was the best gift I have ever received. I would always dress up and sing along in the mic to the Christian songs my mom would always play. One thing that has had such a huge influence in my career is pop music. When I was 4, I had discovered the song “Break Free” by Ariana Grande and that basically changed my life, I knew what I wanted to be, a pop singer. Every single song made by Ariana at that time, I would sing. Her first album was my favorite thing in the world when I was 4. Something about the melody and sound of pop made me want to dance and sing all the time (and I always did). Growing up seeing artists like Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift in their sparkly outfits on stage, made me want to do the same. I took to realization that I want to sing as a career at the age of 9. I started to take vocal lessons and piano lessons. I was the happiest girl on earth. In 4th and 5th grade I would post YouTube videos of myself singing songs by Ariana Grande. My voice wasn’t what it is now, but every time I watch those videos, I feel so proud of my younger self for never giving up, because kids in my grade would say that my voice was funny. I never paid attention to comments about my voice in elementary school because I loved what I did and I knew that I would keep working to get better. When I was 11, I wrote my first song, “Make History”, after my best friend had stopped talking to me. Ever since then, I have been writing songs always. It’s so therapeutic. Things I can’t explain, I put it in a song. When I get heartbroken, I’m going to be writing 5 songs. I am so proud of my journey and the things my parents have done for me and the way God wrote everything so perfectly for my life. Can’t wait to see what he has for me!

Naylah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Naylah Campechano-Vega and I’m a 15 year old singer-songwriter who hopes of winning a Grammy one day! I started to take vocal lessons when I was 9 years old, that’s when I knew that I truly wanted to take singing seriously, as a job. As the years have past, I’ve learned to always stay true to myself and my music, and to always work hard to make my dreams come true. Songwriting to me, is the most important thing in my life, I love love love to write and it’s something that I want to continue to do for the rest of my life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To me, the most rewarding thing about this job of being an artist is that you get to meet so many people in your life. Different backgrounds and stories from people who do what you do ! I also believe that the experiences that you have are so rewarding. Getting yourself out there is rewarding. Doing what you love the most is the most rewarding thing of being an artist.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Goals that are driving my creative journey is going to Berklee College of Music, opening a school for children who want to do music but can’t afford it, winning a Grammy, and going on big tours. These are all things that I hope to do one day, I hope to sing my heart out on big stages and I’ll never stop working hard until I get there. Everything’s possible.
