We were lucky to catch up with Naya Ashley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Naya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents did literally everything right. They worked so hard to give me everything a child could ever desire, even in adulthood. They show up and show out at all times. My parents have always been super supportive of my dreams, and I think a lot of creatives need to experience that. They believe in me, even when I find it hard to believe in myself. And lastly, they’ve always instilled in me the importance of putting God first and trusting Christ Jesus.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Naya Ashley, and I am a published celebrity fashion stylist. Well, it all started in high school. Fashion, for me, is a form of expression. I’ve always had a love for fashion and getting dressed. Upon graduating high school, I was voted best dressed, and from that moment on, I decided to pursue a career in fashion. I attended Old Dominion University, and my major was Fashion Merchandising. During my studies, I was granted the opportunity to study abroad at Mod’Spe, a fashion business school in Paris, France. While studying there, I learned the depths of luxury fashion. And from that moment on, I knew God called me to work in this industry. I think my character and eager desire to be different sets me apart. I want to look at my work 10 years from now and still love it the same. I don’t want to ever be for the moment. This industry is so hard, it will chew you up and spit you out. I think I am most proud of my tenacity, and my ability to stay grounded in such a hectic field. I am known to be a woman of integrity, and I take pride in that.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In this business, you have to learn to take nothing personal.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to use your gifts and talents as a form of expression and income simultaneously is so rewarding to me. It grants me a sense of freedom.
