We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nawoko Kato. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with nawoko below.
Nawoko, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
it was during the time when i still worked for a company, doing totally different thing for living. i worked overtime so much that i did not have much time to enjoy my life outside work. so i stopped and started to think, “would like to earn money for living by doing something that i am actually interested”. so i went through my interest since my childhood days and noticed that i was always taking photos which i thought was a worthwhile endeavor. at the same time, i volunteered to be a background for a tv show and found a still photographer on set. i did not know until then that still photographers are needed on set, and that matched with my interest that i wanted to do for my living.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
i am an unit stills photographer, who got in the industry by building a network here in LA. i provide on set photos by capturing the right moment at the right time and right place. i have calm, peaceful, and chill personality, who provides safe and comfortable working environment to everyone on set. since i am tiny, i can mostly hide anywhere so i do not get into anyone’s way, which surprises others because they sometimes cannot find me at all. my clients are happy with the fact i capture the moments they needed, and also the moments they did not notice happening.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
my mission is to have my name in the end credit as unit stills photographer, for the movie and/ or tv show that will also be seen in the country where i used to live.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
when someone says they like my photo that i did not think it was good enough. sometimes if you are being professional photographer for too long, you pay too much attention to technical side than passion you can feel from the photos.
