Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Navern Nash-longshaw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Navern , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
But that’s not all. Château Neuf is proud to partner with Faire wage organizations, working with female artisans to empower them financially. We believe that financial independence is key to women’s empowerment. By supporting these organizations, whether through purchasing raw materials or finished products, we’re giving these women the ability to grow, become stable, and access essential resources like healthcare and education. It’s about helping them leave difficult situations and even start their own businesses in the future. Additionally, most of our raw materials are purchased from women-led/owned companies. We’re empowering women at every level, from freeing themselves from the opinions of others to gaining financial freedom. Being a part of the solution is a win-win situation, and it’s all about consciously raising the bar for women’s empowerment.”
Navern , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The world of textiles amazes me every day; it’s one full of endless possibilities. It is truly the gateway in understanding the journey, diversity, and inclusiveness of other cultures. There is more to a beautiful piece of textile than meets the eye; it’s actually the lens that allows me to see and understand the journey of others. This is evident throughout my work, from the selection of materials and mediums to the multiple techniques and layers of colors and textures used in the creation of a piece.
To truly appreciate the uniqueness of my company and work, one must understand the framework. The ultimate goal is to be an outlet of change, purpose, intention, and commitment. The company was created with neglected woman in mind – the ones who possesses a type of beauty that deserves recognition yet, lack of confidence hinders their boldness to shine. I create unique, bold, and beautiful pieces with that woman in mind so that when I encounter her, I can help her free herself from her insecurities and truly embrace the beauty she so desperately tries to express.I create with intention because I want my pieces to personally speak to the beauty of all women and empower them.
Connecting with and understanding the journey of other cultures allows us to identify the struggles that others face. Through my work, I am able to connect with others and have a greater appreciation of other cultures. Before I finish a piece of work, I have already connected with a particular culture, even if I have never been to that country. For example, as I pick up a piece of raffia yarn, I see the labor, sacrifices made, and the hours and days it took someone to create the vibrant material running through my hands. This simple concept of intentionality motivated me to partner with organizations that advocate for fair wages for women artisans. I wanted women to be financially independent and stable, freeing them not just from societal expectations of beauty but also empowering them financially. Using our gifts, talents, and skills with purpose can create opportunities for others. Running a sustainable business is challenging, but my passion as a textile artist and my desire for the embetterment of women outweighs the difficulties. This passion has also driven me to create workshops to educate students on using textiles in a sustainable way and understanding the environmental impact it has on their communities and lives.
In my work, I aim to convey this passion through implementing a variety of techniques, mediums, layers, and textures from different cultures to highlight inclusiveness and diversity. When interacting with my pieces, whether through touch or scent, individuals can feel a connection with the product and know it was created with them in mind. For this reason, you won’t see just one type of material or technique used to cultivate my designs.
My design philosophy is to create what you love and never be afraid to experiment with new ideas, concepts, or transcend cultural lines to explore new discoveries and provoke creativity. One’s full potential is never fully realized behind closed doors.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistency is key when it comes to building a strong reputation in the fashion community. It’s not an overnight process, but by consistently delivering high-quality products, providing excellent customer service, and staying true to your brand’s goals and objectives, you’ll make a lasting impact.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Most of my products are available online, but I find that the majority of sales happen in person. I believe the reason for this is because my customers can connect with the brand and see and feel the product in person. The number one reaction to the pieces is the weight. At first glance, they look heavy, but when customers pick them up and realize it’s actually the contrary. They are also impressed by the level of craftsmanship, the layers, textures, and overall quality of sustainable accessories. So, I believe that having direct interaction with the product and being able to connect with the brand’s story and objective solidifies customers’ decision to make a purchase. While online shopping offers a good look at the product and easier access for purchase, it doesn’t guarantee sales since that direct interaction is not present. However, I believe that the online service mostly benefits returning customers.
