We recently connected with Natthaphon Suthinirunkul and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Natthaphon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I could proudly say my passion for graphic design and packaging design stems from my parent’s teaching. Between my father who forms jewelry and adornments to my mother’s love for creating fabric goods, growing up in a creative environment inspired me to follow a similar trajectory. My passion began with a little 7 years old me learning to fold a crane origami. That little fun exercise quickly turned into a start of my creative outlet where I could explore its various graphic forms and shapes as well as physical forms, creating an endless number of possibilities of folded paper. The ability to transform a 2D piece of paper into an intricate 3D product encouraged my current passion for brand packaging, as well as graphic design as a whole.

Natthaphon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Thai brand designer currently based in Los Angeles. Since I was young, My passion has not always been in graphic design. I love anything creative and was curious about everything and anything. I always knew early on that I wanted to do something creative when I grow up. During my undergraduate degree at ArtCenter, my love for origami served as a foundation of my passion for packaging design. I learned that it’s so much more than just the package. it’s everything around it. That’s when I realized that branding is really the term for I want to do. I love looking at a well design branding system. There is something magical and satisfying about seeing a well design branding system. As I am learning and growing, I want to use my graphic design skills and help people and give back to the community in some way. Fortunately, an acquaintance of mine started non-profit organization called Project Deedee which now I am apart of. The organization aims to spotlighting up and coming young Thai artists. We’re supporting them by providing spaces to share their talent and we’re looking to expand ourselves by providing exhibitions, project collars, event, residencies and mentorship.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
What drives me in my creative journey is the impact my work has. My mission in life is to use the skills I learned to help the community in some way. I want to help more people. Whether that be building their brands or being a part of a good organization like Project Deedee. Whatever, I am designing, these ideas are always in the back of my mind. I believe that the design should almost always be meaningful.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think I speak for a lot of designers and creative when I say this, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing something that you spend tons of time and energy working on in the world and being able to say “I did that” or “I was a part of that”. it’s the feeling of pride, joy and a sense of accomplishment.
