We recently connected with Natisha Mosier and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Natisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
After taking just one ceramics class with my son at a non profit community art organization, I was hooked on clay. The scent of a freshly opened bag of clay connects me to my grandpa, who was a gardener, it connected me to nature, it connected me with my son. I would sit on Saturday mornings creating tiny things and I enjoyed how the time just flew by. Working with clay puts me in my zen mode! I was not very good at throwing things on the wheel, but I enjoyed rolling out beads, and creating cute shapes and imprinting with nature, so the idea to create tiny wearable works of art just organically formed.
I had no idea if handmade porcelain jewelry would be successful but in my heart I knew I needed to give this a shot. I firmly believe if you are passionate about something, about your art, your process then share it with the universe. Me sharing my creative journey could inspire another soul, and help them along on theirs.
I never thought of creating jewelry as solving a problem. Jewelry is a luxury not a need. But I’ve come to learn that mothers are purchasing my pieces for their daughters, daughters are gifting my brooches to their grandmothers, husbands are buying for their wives and that is simply a beautiful feeling. Its just wonderful to know that someone admired my work, and gifted it to a loved one.
I create porcelain jewelry that I hope not only connects me to nature, but also connects us all through tiny works of art.
Natisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Natisha, but everyone calls me Tisha or Tish. My background is in design and product development. I have 16 years of product quality assurance experience so I bring so much detail to my work. I have always been creative, but after taking a ceramics class with my son, I wanted to work even more with clay. I was simply hooked! I signed up for more ceramics classes, and loved it so much that I dove head first, purchased a small kiln, (set it up in my garage) a few glaze colors, a bag of porcelain from a shop in a near by city, and I just started creating. Each piece is hand shaped, sanded, bisque fired, then glazed fired by me. Sometimes a third firing is required for gold lusters and mother of pearl pieces. It’s a very labor intensive process, but I love every minute of it. The time just seems to drift by when I’m rolling out clay.
When I started my brand, I knew I wanted to do my best to purchase supplies as close to home as possible which is no easy task. My chains and findings are made in the US, I purchase most of my clay and glazes from smalls shops (to support other small business), and I’ve incorporated eco-friendly packaging.
I love dainty little jewelry that can be worn every day, with simple colors. My pieces are like having your grandmas fine china with you but in jewelry form!
When you purchase a Blue Rochelle piece, know that it has been created with love, with emotion, connection, using the best materials for everyday wear.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
If you are passionate about what you do, you must be resilient. When I first started my business, I have to admit my style was a bit all over the place. Even though I hadn’t nailed down my signature style, I applied for craft shows, and reached out to small boutiques! Crazy right! So when I got the rejection letter that I didn’t get into the show, or the no response from that boutique owner, I felt crushed. I thought why am I even trying. But as I would sit down at my kitchen table, and rolled out the clay, enjoying the process I just kept creating. No one can tell you to stop following your heart, your passions, what sparks joy inside of you! So as the years progressed I’d reach out to a few more shop owners, and one did get back to me. I have my work in her shop today, and I just love the community that I get to be apart of.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what helped me build my reputation within my market is consistency. I know its been said before, but it’s 100% true. Once I started to consistently attend markets, pop ups, having my work in local boutiques, and posting on social media, my brand reputation for handmade dainty porcelain jewelry began to become recognized.
