We were lucky to catch up with Nathan Stepney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a youth, art was always fascinating to me. Growing up in Harlem Ny, I was always be surrounded with art and it’s multiple expressions. This richness of the culture and vibe of Manhattan nurtured and fed my creative appetite. At the age of thirteen I was introduced to acrylics by my high school art teacher, who was also a professional artist. Along with this traditional instruction in class came the blend of the urban inner city artistic expression in the streets. Simultaneously I had been introduced to graffiti by my neighborhood friends.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey as an artist had many turns and adjustments. I was indecisive as to which direction I’d take after graduating high school, caught in between continuing my education and passion for art which I honestly felt insecure, or as I thought taking a more stable path in going to school to be a computer technician. Well I chose the latter and eventually worked a major Brokerage Firm for twelve years in computer operations. However during this time I continued kept myself busy with art with painting commissions along with my personal projects. As technology advanced in the industry our department became more automated, It was when I was offered to stay with the company or take a severance package. I was young and free, so I took the package a went into art full time. This was a pivotal moment on my journey which gave me the much needed confidence I’d require for the road ahead. I believe you can’t be an artist and also insecure .As I developed as an artist my commitment has allowed me to be free in my expression.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist there’s many rewards, to have the opportunity, talent and skill set to create is rewarding. However it’s when I’ve completed a project personal or commissioned, knowing that I’ve given my all, answering the tough questions to myself, “am I pleased with the outcome? Is my client pleased? Is there a memorable take away or impact to the viewer. Does the compensation match time and effort? If these questions are answered correctly then I have been sufficiently rewarded.
Have you ever had to pivot?
During the pandemic I found myself as a creative having to pivot. Gallery’s weren’t opening, shows were being canceled, things were almost completely shut down. It was during this period I continued to work and stay focused, As a matter of fact the challenges made me more resilient and started to host my own events, which expanded my customer base.
