We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nathan Ricks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nathan, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I could’ve made in my career was being a full-time musician. Just think about it. I wanted to take the nonsafe route in the world and work based on what I’m able to book for myself. through the busy seasons and dry seasons. I decided to do what most don’t consider a “Real Job” and make it my full-time career, while not taking the route of a 9-5 music job or contracted wedding band to do it. of course no shade to those other areas of the industry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a 29-year-old full-time musician. Drummer/ Music Director/ Producer, you name it. I have been grateful to have been afforded the opportunity to work with a wide range of incredible musicians and artists in my journey in the music industry so far.
Many individuals in the music industry, often start by learning their craft through formal education or by playing in bands and collaborating with other musicians. They may also gain experience by working in recording studios or providing live performances at various events.
As for the types of products and services that I provide, these can vary widely depending on their specific expertise and interests. Some may focus on providing live performances, while others may specialize in recording and producing music. Additionally.
When it comes to setting myself apart from others in their industry, I often differentiate myself through my unique style, technical proficiency, and ability to connect with their audience. I also leverage social media and other marketing channels to promote my work and build a loyal following.
For potential clients, it’s important to know that I am passionate about my craft and am dedicated to providing high-quality services that meet their clients’ needs. Whether you’re looking for a talented drummer to perform at your event or to help you record your next album, you can trust that I will go above and beyond to deliver exceptional results.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Regular communication: Regular communication with clients can help keep you top-of-mind and show that you value their business & Artiststry. This could include updates on upcoming gigs, or even personal emails or text messages to check in and see how they’re doing.
Social media: Social media is a powerful tool for musicians to connect with their audience and build a loyal following. You can use platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to share updates on your music, and behind-the-scenes content, and engage with your followers.
Live performances: Nothing beats the energy of a live performance, and this is a great way to connect with your audience and build a loyal following. Make sure to promote your gigs and events through social media and other channels to ensure that people can know when and where they can see you play.
Merchandise: Selling merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, and other items can help build brand loyalty and create a sense of community among your fans. Make sure to promote your merchandise on social media and at your live performances.
Personal touch: Finally, make sure to always show your clients or Artists that you appreciate them. This could include sending a personalized thank you note or even a small gift to show your gratitude for their support. By going the extra mile to connect with your clients, you can build a strong brand and loyal following that will support you for years to come.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of the most effective strategies for growing my clientele as a musician is to build a strong online presence. This involves creating a website and social media accounts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Having an online presence not only allows you to showcase your music but also enables potential clients to discover you easily. It is essential to regularly update your profiles with high-quality content such as music videos, photos, and music samples.
Networking is another effective strategy that I’ve done by growing my clientele. Attend live music events, collaborate with other musicians, and join online music communities to meet and connect with potential clients. Word of mouth is a powerful tool in the music industry, and building relationships with other musicians and industry professionals can lead to more opportunities.
Finally, by me having a professional and positive attitude is critical to growing my clientele. Be responsive to inquiries, show up on time for gigs, and always deliver your best performance. Clients are more likely to refer you to others and work with you again if you are reliable, professional, and easy to work with.
In summary, I’ve built a strong online presence, networking, and having a professional attitude are all effective strategies for how I grew my clientele as a musician.
