We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nathan Peterson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I wrote a book and an album during the live of my daughter, Olivia. She wasn’t supposed to survive birth, yet lived 14 months. Each day was a gift, and terrifying. Her life was an invitation to stay present, even when things were incredibly uncertain. I wrote a second book and second album about holding this same posture after her passing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Bio:
Nathan Peterson is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the human experience, connection through sound, and freedom.
As a singer-songwriter, his folk, indie, and ambient-influenced music blends a raw, emotive voice with simple, poetic lyrics that touch on themes of love, loss, healing, and togetherness.
Beyond music, Nathan is also a powerful communicator, blending storytelling and awareness practices to foster deeper presence and connection. With vulnerable honesty, he shares personal insights and experiences that resonate on a profound, almost mystical level, guiding audiences inward towards deeper self-awareness and a greater sense of compassion, generosity, and courage.
Born in Chicago and raised in Germany, Colorado, and Illinois, Nathan now resides in Chicago with his wife and five children.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Creative professionals need to give their full attention to their work. No person can enter a creative state while afraid. Our society can do A LOT better at creating a framework for financially supporting the artists who are creating original work, so that they can keep their focus on creating.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to help our culture to find a tangible sense of rest and safety in the present moment.
