Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathan Nez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nathan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up on the Navajo Nation I knew I had a love for art at a very young age and while being deployed in Iraq, I found that passion again and drew on envelopes to send back to family. After coming home from war I went down a dark path dealing with drugs and alcohol and PTSD but it wasn’t till going back to school at University of New Mexico that I knew doing art was a way to help me deal with not only my PTSD but also a way to pursuit my passion for art.
Nathan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a Navajo artist, I took new steps and a new direction with my style by going beyond boundaries of Native American art by including a collaboration of my graffiti style. I have done Murals, Magazine covers, mixed media on Canvas, Wood and as well as Sculptures. I also enjoy making wearable artwork like Earrings. One of my biggest moments was painting a mural on Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless.
I have a passion for art and it has help me to deal with my PTSD from the war in Iraq.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
the way i built my audience on Social Media is by staying active and always using hashtags.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
seeing and hearing the positive and also negative feedback of my artwork because it always pushes me to do better and keep the creative mind going.
