We recently connected with Nathan Jarelle and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Thank you for having me. I started writing as a teenager. I used to keep a journal which I would use to write poetry, lyrics or short stories. It eventually manifested into something bigger. Sadly, I was inconsistent with my writing which dampened my growth at that time. When you’re young and still trying to identify who you are and what your message is to the world, it’s difficult. My greatest obstacle was myself because I was always a writer, but I would try to convince myself that I wasn’t.

Nathan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
It’s hard to identify with a particular genre because my works are so complex. I’m working on a series right now, Beyond Poetry, which is a blend of urban fiction, poetry, romance and other facets of unique storytelling. I don’t like to color inside of a box when I’m working. I believe art allows us to dabble outside of the lines to create the perfect picture.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding aspect, for me, as a writer is creating my own fictional world with life-like characters that feel real. You know as an author when you’ve hit that sweet spot with a reader when they ask for more.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My work breathes new life into me, providing me with purpose. I absolutely believe that, and also believe that I am where I’m supposed to be. My goal is to use my gift as a tool to inspire other creatives to come together. My dream is to see one (if not more) of my works reach the big screen. I would love to see Beyond Poetry imitate life right before our eyes.
